Swedish born Pia Brandt has been a firm fixture in Chantilly for many years and so has her husband Joakim, who still rides their horses when they travel around the world to participate at the likes of the Meydan Carnival, the Saudi Arabia races or when they come to Britain.
For the first time though, he now officially features on the card as a trainer, albeit not by himself but together with Pia. “Yes,” she laughs. “We are now both officially training the horses, but obviously we have always been working together.”
Like everyone else, they had to patiently sit through a couple of months of lockdown, but Brandt says: “It was actually ok. In fact, some of our horses had been sick and wouldn’t have run anyway, so it wasn’t all that bad. At least they got their timing right!”
The horses are now back on track and after supplementing Farfar in the Group 1 Prix Morny this Sunday, the Brandt team is preparing itself for a busy autumn.
Here, they kindly talk to Liz Price for attheraces.com about the horses they are hoping to run in the next few weeks.
