In terms of successful trainers, Pia Brandt is Sweden’s most famous export. Based in Chantilly since the end of 2005, the likeable Swede looks after 75 horses and is very hands on, from driving the horsebox to the races to riding out in the morning.
And the hard work has paid off as the quality of the horses in her care has improved to such an extent that she celebrated her first Group 1 winner in 2016 when Mount Ormel won the Grand Prix de Paris.
While waiting for this Group 1 success, she was not idle and made her entrance on the international stage when L’Amour de Ma Vie created a bit of a surprise in the Group 2 Balanchine Stakes at Meydan in 2014.
Since then her horses have won several races abroad, including at Lingfield and Dundalk. This season, Pia was back in Meydan where she celebrated a first victory in the UAE 1000 Guineas and then came to Royal Ascot where she saddled Called To The Bar in the Gold Cup.
Here, she tells Liz Price about her horses that are likely to run during the summer.
