Breaking into the Irish training ranks is no easy feat given just how competitive that circuit is, but one man that has made significant steps forward in that sphere in a sort space of time is Richard O’Brien.
A dentist by trade, he spent a number of years working with David O’Meara in England prior to returning to Ireland to set up his training base in Ballingarry in Limerick. Having had his first runner in the closing days of 2016, O’Brien has gone from strength to strength since then.
He has come to widespread attention for his ability to sweeten up and improve horses bought cheaply from other trainers, but he has also shown an ability to train from scratch too, saddling both two-year-olds and three-year-olds to compete in and win maidens.
O’Brien took time out from his busy schedule to talk through his team of horses with Kevin Blake of attheraces.com.
