A hugely competitive contest. Melesina and Davy's Dilemma come into this on the back of 7f successes last time, while Temerity had George Reme in close proximity when second at Newcastle last time and reopposes on 2lb worse terms. The form of Now Children's Hamilton win has been franked by the runner-up, but so too has THIRD ORDER's Beverley success. Karl Burke's colt pulled well clear of a Godolphin horse at Beverley last time, and the runner-up has since won at Epsom so the form looks very solid indeed.

PARTITIA continues on an upward curve and is expected to build on her conditions victory over this trip at Chester last time and find the improvement needed to score. Bletchley finished a fair sixth in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes last time and merits plenty of respect now eased into Group 3 company, likewise recent Curragh fifth Drumfad Bay, for whom this drop back to 6f could also be a source of immediate improvement. Delectation travelled smoothly when winning on debut at Thirsk and is worth a cursory market check now up in grade.

INTISAAB endured a troubled run at the Curragh last Sunday, just as he had done when second in the Great St Wilfrid on his penultimate outing, and wouldn't be winning out of turn if getting his head in front. Roudee hasn't been hit hard for his distance win at Ripon and should be thereabouts, likewise penalised Doncaster 7f scorer Stamp Hill, reliable three-year-old Flying Pursuit, and the consistent Intense Style, who will relish some cut. George Bowen, Louis The Pious and George Bowen are well treated on their best form and could also figure.

Three-year-olds have won the last two runnings of this and the representatives of that generation look strong here. Haley Bop won nicely enough at Chester and merits respect, while Another Touch was not far away at York and Garcia struck twice earlier in the season before struggling at Ascot last time. Preferred ahead of those is MORANDO, who followed up a wide-margin Windsor success with an equally emphatic handicap win at Chester. He's up 10lb for that, but remains thoroughly progressive.

Kevin Ryan has enjoyed plenty of success in this race in recent years and runs Nunthorpe also-ran Brando, the capable Teruntum Star and Flaming Spear, for whom he's procured the services of Pat Smullen in the saddle. Last year's winning trainer Richard Fahey relies on Stewards' Cup fourth Growl, who was unlucky in running at Goodwood and is likely to get involved, but this could go to the rapidly-improving MAGNUS MAXIMUS. A winner by five lengths at Chelmsford, he followed up off the same mark as today at Ascot last time so looks well treated for this. Johnny Barnes has been keeping decent company and could be interesting for John Gosden.

Those nearer the head of the weights make the most appeal with preference going to FLIGHT OFFICER. Saeed bin Suroor's yard has gone through a torrid time over the summer with illness but his horses have come back to form and this son of New Approach should appreciate the slight ease in the ground with Pat Smullen a notable jockey booking. Felix De Vega warrants respect returning from a break, while Percy Street is just 3lb higher than when beating the selection in a Newmarket handicap at the end of June and can be forgiven his two efforts in Listed company subsequently.

Karl Burke has two solid chances with London Protocol and Explosive Power while Glengarry has done little wrong in two starts since switched to handicap company and is unlikely to be far away either. Ballymore Castle has claims but WAR GLORY edges the vote. Richard Hannon's colt seemingly doesn't know how to run a bad race and he looks sure to go close lining up off the same mark as when beaten a length in class 2 company at Doncaster last time.

HARDSTONE gets the tentative vote in what looks a tricky 'getting out stakes' for punters. It has been a fairly in-and-out year for Michael Dods' charge thus far, but there was plenty to like about his latest fourth behind Trendsetter at Carlisle (the latter meets on 6lb worse terms today) and he finds himself 6lb lower than when winning this race 12 months ago. Nietzsche and Project Bluebook both arrive on the back of game Catterick victories and are respected, while Captain Carleton and Mukhayyam are just a couple more to consider.
