It is hard to see past Philip Hobbs' GUMBALL, who conjured up memories of his owners former heroes Rooster Booster and Detroit City when routing the opposition by 31-lengths on his hurdles debut at Stratford. Even at this early stage the Triumph Hurdle was muted by connections in the post-race debrief and it will be interesting to see how much he enhances his Prestbury Park claims here. Malaya is entitled to provide stiffer opposition this time and she was a Listed hurdle winner in Auteuil on her last French start, subsequently joining a top UK operation at Ditcheat. Speedo Boy was a handy competitor on the Flat and it will be interesting to see what he has in the locker now trying hurdles for the first time.

Colin Tiizzard's ELEGANT ESCAPE was second on his sole point start, only one-length adrift of the highly touted Samcro, which gives optimism that we could be about to see the best of the Venn Farm five-year-old now sent over the larger obstacles. He was not disgraced in his novice hurdle season, scoring twice (including at this meeting), and running with credit at the big spring festivals. Coo Star Sivola holds solid claims and was last seen fourth in the Martin Pipe at the Festival. Still only a five-year-old there should be more victories to come for Nick Williams charge, while Mia's Storm has plenty in hand when scoring over hurdles for the second successive time at Haydock and she could be a dangerously treated.

Paul Nicholls has landed this prize five times in the last 10 years and his Amour De Nuit is likely to attract plenty of attention after his routine return success at Newton Abbot last month. He defied a double penalty on that occasion and, based on his flat exploits with Sir Mark Prescott, should prove capable of staying this additional couple of furlongs. Harry Skelton chooses Tommy Rapper over stablemate and four-timer seeking Listen To The Man, while Black Mischief has long been held in high regard at the Harry Fry yard. VISION DES FLOS impressively won a valuable Punchestown bumper and was purchased by Alan Potts for for 270,000 euros. He is open to improvement over hurdles on debut for Colin Tizzard and looks tough to oppose.

Double Ross bids for back to back successes in the race having landed the spoils 12 months ago and went on after that to finish a fine third in the Hennessy Gold Cup behind Native River. He has gone well fresh in the past so another bold bid isn't out of the question. Killala Quay landed the second leg of the series at Doncaster and would warrant consideration if on a going day for a yard that tend to do well in the autumn. Theatrical Star, Lamb Or Cod, and Shuil Royale all merit respect if running to their best but a chance is taken with POTTERS CROSS. His form tailed off at the back end of last season but he won at this meeting 12 months ago when fresh and posted some solid efforts afterwards in the early part of the season so this could be the time to catch him.

OLDGRANGEWOOD appeals as being well-handicapped over hurdles as he is 13lb lower over timber than his chase mark and the first-time tongue tie could elicit further improvement with the Dan Skelton yard currently in superb form. Elgin was a solid novice hurdler last season and has the potential for further improvement now going handicapping for the first time, while Utility has solid credentials in his bid for a hat-trick of successes along with Cyrname and Discours D'un Roi who can both improve on their first seasons in the UK for leading yards.

VILLAGE VIC has a very good record fresh, having form figures of 121312 on his seasonal debut, and he finished a neck second in the BetVictor Gold Cup on his first appearance last season. This race is competitive but it is nowhere near as good at that event and the 10-year-old is only 3lb higher in the ratings now. Sizing Granite was last seen winning at Punchestown in April but he had been disappointing prior to that and may not be one to trust following an 11lb rise in the ratings. Double Shuffle was also going to be a doubtful stayer of over 4m2f and so his National run can be forgotten. The seven-year-old's previous form gives him a shout this afternoon. With Paul Nicholls' amongst the winners at the moment Romain De Senam also warrants consideration.

Goforthecraic is likely to prove popular having won his point-to-point at Bangor by 25 lengths in March and he has joined the Dan Skelton team where he could prove more than useful. Tossapenny is another point winner open to improvement but BUBBLE O'CLOCK shades the vote coming from a yard who won a division of this 12 months ago with Coastal Tiep and he comes from a solid family.

Fergal O'Brien landed this prize last year and his record in bumpers last season overall entitles Coolanly to plenty of respect. Drovers Lane cost connections 135,000 pounds at the sales in May last year and he is bred to go well in this sphere before moving onto better things. Luckime showed promise on debut in April at Carlisle for Venetia Williams but this can go the way of KHAGE. The hood on debut is a slight concern, but the Gloucestershire-based handler has his string in excellent form and he is 2-5 in bumpers here in the last five years. Mont Des Avaloirs is another name to note.
