Heavy Metal looked an improved sort at Brighton but has been done no favours by the 14 stall and BADDILINI is preferred. Outpointed by the potentially useful Lyric Ace on Polytrack last time, the colt created a good impression when scoring on his Windsor debut and, back on turf, can return to winning brackets. Tom Dascombe fires a four-pronged assault at the contest and a market check may assist in revealing stable expectations, with Pippy looking the most likely.

The Ballydoyle juggernaut rolls onto the Roodee courtesy of Betterbetterbetter who seems likely to live up to her name on the evidence of two runs to date, most recently when easing home in an ordinary Dundalk maiden. She's impossible to assess in this grade but stable ability to dramatically improve charges at three necessitates she's taken seriously. However, INCHINA created a good impression when making all and quickening on desperate ground at Newbury and the daughter of Montjeu receives a tentative vote. Absolute Crackers, Apothecary, Dreams Of Fire and Cubanita are also full of abundant promise.

GULF OF NAPLES would have been a confident choice as he seems sure to stay, looks on the upgrade and could well develop into a Group horse as the season progresses. However, he's been allocated the worst draw of all and will require every scrap of luck going to make his mark. Stakes should be trimmed accordingly, but hopefully he can still take a good early position and run his race. Overturn cannot be ignored in his quest for back-to-back Chester Cups and should certainly be able to take his usual prominent position. Shubaat is a fascinating runner having squeezed in as the first reserve, while Cesarewitch winner, the consistent Never Can tell, completes the shortlist.

Blue Jack would be the one on a straight track but Tom Dascombe's charge has the 'car park' draw and the C&D winner is reluctantly passed over. Falasteen will land another nice handicap sooner or later and Kieren Fallon is a good booking but stable companion LEXI'S HERO is preferred. He scored in good style at this meeting last year, handling the track well and winning with something to spare. Beaten in some hot sprints as the season progressed, he should be competitive here despite top-weight. Tax Free and Foxy Music are also noted in an open contest.

Star Date and Finity Run both did well when finishing runner-up in decent maidens on their return to action whilst Frankie Dettori is an interesting booking for Richard Fahey on Badea. Father Of Science should progress significantly from a rather sluggish Navan debut but the vote goes to LINKABLE. The Charlie Hills-trained son of Rail Link showed some promise in a couple of starts last term and is expected to have improved considerably over the winter months.

NOBLE STORM should be all the better his first run since last July when leading his field a merry dance in Listed company at Lingfield until fading late on. Well berthed to maximise his blinding early speed, this looks a good opportunity for the McMahon inmate. Dinkum Diamond disappointed on his seasonal reappearance but the best of his form last term, notably a fine effort at Group 3 level behind Deacon Blues, puts him bang in the picture. Borderlescott looks on the decline from his glory days but should still deliver a solid effort, along with Addictive Dream.

Early-season three-year-old handicaps can be tricky and Tom Dascombe, as in the opener, adopts a mob-handed approach. It's hard to split the trio so Roger Charlton's ROSSLYN CASTLE is preferred. The Selkirk colt probably didn't beat much in an ordinary Windsor maiden but the stylish nature of the victory indicated a colt with a future. Martin Chuzzlewit should come on plenty for a Newmarket reappearance in what may turn out to be a very decent handicap, whilst Gabrial The Great scored with authority in a poor Newcastle maiden and should improve bundles for that easy success. Bordoni also enters the equation.
