Verdict

LADY JEAN improved with the benefit of an introductory outing over 1000m to open her account over this trip in Cape Town when last seen. She is open to further progress on her KZN debut so gets the nod ahead of the other improving last-start winner in the race LADY GODIVA, whose rider takes a handy 1.5kg off the back. The latter's stablemate, IN THE RED, was only outrun late by a newcomer last time and need only confirm that improvement to have a say in the outcome. Verdict

FIRE FORCE and filly SKIPPER O'MALLEY are long-time maidens but neither would be winning out of turn after recent 2nd-place finishes. Recently relocated NO PRESSURE (first start for the new stable) and DEVIL'S PEAK have more scope for improvement. The latter caught the eye when 2nd over 1900m in first-time cheekpieces and should have a say if repeating that effort with the headgear retained. QHUDE MANIKINIKI is also open to further progress on his reappearance and won't need to improve much to make a winning comeback. ETZEBETH fluffed his lines on Poly last time but could atone back on turf.

CALL OF THE KAROO made a winning KZN introduction and she ought to remain competitive under a 2-point penalty, especially under a 4kg-claiming apprentice. WHAT A PASSION was unlucky not to have finished closer last time and should make her presence felt, even under a 1-point rise. Class-dropper UBUKHWEBEZANA is a 3-time winner over track and trip. Verdict

BLAZING FURY outran market expectations when 4th in a 3yo Highveld Grade 3 over 1100m last time, and on that evidence this extended trip should unlock further improvement. He has a bit to find at the weights but is probably better than rated, so it could pay to follow his progress. Joint best-weighted runners AVERSATOR (recently gelded), class-dropper MAGIC TATTOO, consistent MAGIC SURPRISE and GOLDEN RULE (wide draw) have the form and experience to make life difficult for the selection. RED BOMBER and CARDINAL CHIEF also have the means to get involved.

Progressive GOTTA GO EDDIE acquitted himself well in a stronger race over 1400m last time. He races off an unchanged mark in calmer waters and over a distance more to his liking, so a repeat of that performance could suffice. COUNT OF ROUEN makes his KZN comeback off a career-low mark after an underwhelming Cape Town sojourn. He retains ability and has to be respected at this level.
