PURPLE ROCK was a very unlucky loser at Chelmsford on Saturday, when badly hampered and short of room at the business end before flashing home for a half-length second. Back up from 1m and with fast ground to suit on his turf return, he could gain swift compensation. Berlusca loves it here and confirmed his well-being with a good effort at Chester on Sunday, so the C&D winner is expected to be in the firing line again. However, he finished behind Maroc when the latter filled the runner-up berth over this track and trip last month and the Nikki Evans-trained gelding looks a bigger threat to the selection.

METALLIC BLACK and Moyassar look the ones to focus on despite carrying penalties for winning last time out. The latter built on the promise of his opening two performances with a facile success at Chelmsford and Richard Hannon's charge looks a nice sort, but he has to give 3lb to the former and that could prove crucial. Richard Fahey's inmate ran out a very impressive winner over 6f at Pontefract on debut, form which has been boosted by the fourth running well at York since, and the son of Bated Breath shaped like he will have learnt plenty from that introduction. Blyton is the most experienced in the field and completes the shortlist.

Stewardess made the most of a dream run up the rail to land a maiden handicap at Ripon in good style latest and she must be respected on that form, but it took her 14 attempts to get off the mark and a follow up is no guarantee off 4lb higher. Boudica Bay was just over three lengths back in third that day but reopposes on better terms, and has since run well in second at Thirsk. Preference is for HAVERLAND, who looks feasibly treated off a mark of 66 and ran well enough after a slow start when blowing away the cobwebs at Nottingham on Tuesday.

A tricky puzzle for punters to solve but there is plenty to like about the chances of BORN TO FINISH, who powered home to win well over slightly shorter at Bath 15 days ago and a 4lb rise in the ratings is unlikely to prevent a bold bid for the double from this in-form five-year-old. Hee Haw drops in class and in the handicap and would be a big threat if first-time cheekpieces have the desired effect, while Kodicat hit the crossbar at Thirsk latest and may be coming to hand.

Back in a handicap for the first time this year, UNDER THE COVERS picked up a decent pot with plenty to spare over 5f at Glorious Goodwood recently and the decision to turn him out under a 6lb penalty allows him to race off a 3lb lower perch than his revised mark. He gets the nod ahead of Gorgeous Noora, who still looks feasibly treated after a 2lb rise for winning at Newmarket, and the hat-trick seeking Zip Along, who isn't without a chance of defying an 8lb hike with further progress expected.

Maifalki has already won twice this year, the most recent of which came at Beverley two starts ago, and he arrives on what should be a workable mark. MEDALLA DE ORO was unfortunate to bump into a well-handicapped three-year-old last time but that form does suggest that he can win a race of this nature. Busy Street has not been successful since 2015 but he put in some good efforts last year and should be monitored in the betting market on his debut for new connections.

Poppy Love made a winning handicap debut at Wolverhampton 10 days ago and she can be expected to go well once again. That said, this is a tougher race and she has to carry a 6lb penalty, which means that the preference is for MISS MUMTAZ. Ian Williams' filly has gone close in two competitive races in recent weeks and she may improve for a first-time visor. Others to note are Ghalia Al Thumama and Alexandrakollontai.
