Not a race to set the pulse racing but ICE COLD BEX comes out best at the weights on his first venture into the plating scene. The gelded son of Iceman showed promise last term and when a close third at Newmarket on his seasonal return in May, and although unable to figure in a couple of handicaps since, this looks a reasonable opportunity providing the ability is still intact. Encore Un Fois also has his sights lowered and looks the main threat following respectable efforts on the turf in September and October. Elfine and the others have a lot to prove.

The likes of Absa Lutte, Estonia and lightly-raced Southwell maiden winner Nially Noo are all likely to prove popular following their respective recent wins but a chance is taken on ROCKET ROB. Beaten only a length when favourite for a 21-runner sprint handicap at Doncaster in September, Willie Musson's charge looks extremely well handicapped having come down 6lb in the ratings since and the perfect draw combined with first-time blinkers add weight to his claims today. Crew Cut is another must for the shortlist.

This could go the way of LUCKY ROYALE, who didn't show much for her previous trainer but shaped with a great deal of promise when fourth on her debut for Jeremy Gask at Wolverhampton last month. Further improvement can be expected after only three career starts to date and she's certainly starting handicap life on a workable mark. The penalised Yungaburra struck over this trip at Wolverhampton on Friday and remains well treated on his best efforts, while Brian Sprout and Clerical are also considered.

BALAJO only beat one home on his UK debut in a valuable 2m handicap at Ascot in August but he has some decent form from France, including a win and two placed efforts on an all-weather surface, and it would be no surprise to see him take advantage of this easier opportunity. Scamperdale has squandered a couple of opportunities in similar company on his last two starts but must be feared if able to bounce back. Dr Livingstone and Foxhaven are struggling but neither would be a shock winner.

It's hard to avoid the potential of VIVID BLUE, a half-sister to Group 2 winner Diamond Diva who made a very pleasing debut when held by half a length at Newmarket last month. She's not brilliantly drawn here but should improve on her first effort and certainly looks the one to beat. Galician also found only one too good at the first time of asking but he has stall 13 to overcome, while Safari Sunseeker has the plum draw but was beaten all of six lengths when filling the runner-up spot at Wolverhampton.

AUNTIE KATHRYN relished the move up to a mile when second in first-time headgear on her handicap debut here last week and that effort was all the more meritorious considering she came from a tricky position and didn't get the best of runs. Stuart Williams' Acclamation filly gets another chance off the same handicap mark and providing the visor works again, compensation awaits. Lady Heartbeat is worth a look switched to the all-weather, with Authora and Dickens Rules also considered for top honours.

Ted Durcan got a fine tune out of CITRUS STAR over this trip at Lingfield late last month and although this conditions race demands more of him, Chris Wall's gelding is one to stick with while evidently in such excellent heart. Primaeval was last seen bustling up Edinburgh Knight in a 29-runner Ascot handicap and considering he's better on the all-weather, the son of Pivotal looks the main threat. Kakatosi, Oasis Dancer and the returning Treadwell are others of interest.
