SPEED UP gives the impression he might be suited by further and although this sharp track may not be ideal, his profile is the most impressive on offer. His third to the useful Caravel at Mussleburgh in March represents the best form available and even two recent disappointments read relatively well in the context of this event. He is preferred to North Walk for whom Tony McCoy is an eye-catching booking. The gelding should go close as he is a useful operator at this level, while the rather inconsistent C&D winner, Gamma Velorum, should not be ruled out.

Those with form look opposable as Strevelyn was a well beaten third behind Rupestrian at Sedgefield when Irish Saint pulled up in the same contest. The latter had made a decent debut when second at Hexham but is best watched after that latest effort. Moreover, there are some useful-looking newcomers on display of which HERSCHEL is taken to come out on top. A flat winner at Kempton last November, he ran a really sound race when third at Newbury and represents a top-class yard. Strikemaster and Saffron's Son are also in decent nick on the level and should make their presence felt.

BAREN DE DOC put up a splendid performance on his first run for Tim Vaughan when cruising home at Uttoxeter and is hard to oppose on that evidence as he looked a much-improved performer that day. He has been put up 3lb for that effort but the 7lb claim of his pilot still sees him feasibly treated and the runner-up has scored since in facile fashion. Simple Glory battled on really well to land two Aintree handicap hurdles and should go well in her hat-trick attempt, while Doris's Gift and Fortunate Dave, both course winners, merit respect.

This looks tricky with many in-form contenders clashing but COME OUT FIRING is hard to oppose after two comfortable victories and a decent second to the progressive Classic Swain at Newton Abbot earlier in the month. That run suggested that Andy Haynes' charge remains in good heart and he can give the weight all round. Muntami and Bennynthejets both scored here last time and should give a good account once again. The former looks the main danger to the selection, while Joli Classical and Lord Baskerville are both more than good enough to take a hand in a tasty little heat.

TUTOR has flattered to deceive on a number of occasions but this looks his best chance for some time as he steps down in trip and should be ideally suited by this sharp track. He travels really well through his races and looks appealingly treated off an official mark of 83. The main threat looks to be the lightly-raced and unexposed Mr Presley, 6-lengths behind the selection at Fontwell but arguably open to greater improvement. Obara D'Avril has been going well enough in selling company and is interesting off his lowly perch.

It has taken a while for Alan King to seemingly find the key to the hard-to-fathom BLACK JACARI but the Black Sam Bellamy gelding returned from a considerable break to run out a smooth winner at Fontwell this month, scoring with plenty in hand from Master At Arms. Now he has got his act together there could be plenty more to come and he receives a confident vote. Benetwood has also returned to form but has landed his two latest successes in selling hurdles but this is tougher and recent Hexham handicap winner, Veiled Applause, looks a livelier threat.

GAELIC PRINCE showed promise on his first two outings before stepping up considerably when a close-up third behind the potentially useful Sheriff Hall at Hexham. He stayed on well that day and it will be interesting to see if he is ridden more aggressively on this sharper track. Pinerock is an obvious threat, representing leading connections, but his recent second came on soft ground whereas the selection is proven under these quicker conditions. Toxic Asset comes from a yard with an outstanding record in such contests and any market move should be carefully considered. Quidam Blue is also of interest.
