SHANKILL CASTLE left behind his modest bumper form to spring a surprise on his jumping bow at Ayr. He has since had a wind operation and that could help spark the slight improvement necessary for him to defy a penalty. Roo Roo offered some encouragement in a couple of NH Flat races and can step forward now that he tackles obstacles. Things haven't worked out for the Lucinda Russell pair since starting out under Rules, but Templenaboe might be able to make an impact.

Castletown finally got off the mark when justifying favouritism over the smaller obstacles at this venue, but he has had plenty of opportunities in this sphere and isn't guaranteed to defy a 7lb higher figure. Indian Temple has produced a couple of commendable Aintree performances, while Cooking Fat remains well treated over fences and makes his debut for Pauline Robson. However, SUMKINDOFKING got closest to a useful prospect of Nicky Henderson's on his Ludlow fencing bow and can go one better off the same rating.

A few of these ran with credit at the last meeting here, with Nendrum bouncing back to form to finish a close second, but he flopped on his previous start when TITUS BOLT was a good way in front of him. Jim Goldie's grand servant wasn't beaten far over half a mile further here most recently and the decision to apply blinkers at this distance can have the desired effect. Koala Keel steps into handicap company on the back of a career-best third, and Bahrikate occupied the same position a day earlier so merits respect as well.

CURIOUS CARLOS reached a peak of 139 over hurdles and made a successful transition to the bigger obstacles when seeing off three inferior rivals with the minimum of fuss at Sedgefield. He has to concede weight all round but should prove too strong for Caius Marcius, who was decent over timber himself and is the likely beneficiary should the selection fluff his lines. Cool Valley has won a couple between the flags, while Leonasisland has nothing to recommend him.

BEEVES often contests much stronger races than this and he should take plenty of beating this afternoon despite having to carry top weight. Lord Ballim has to be respected following his recent narrow victory at Worcester, although the eight-year-old will find this tougher. The hat-trick seeking Martiloo could make her presence felt today, while Pain Au Chocolat and Takingrisks also have valid claims.

CRAIGANBOY returned to form when finishing second over 2m4f here in late April and he should take plenty of beating this afternoon as long as his stamina holds out. Jack Devine remains unexposed under Rules and he may improve for a recent wind operation. Celtic Flames won off a higher mark than this over fences in March but is another with stamina doubts.

ENZO BARBIERI confirmed the promise he displayed between the flags by finishing a close second on his Rules debut at Kelso last month. If the son of Milan can take a small step forward then there is every chance that he can go one better today. Gonn Away has a similar profile to the selection and could be a threat, while Ask Paddington and Night Manager both have each-way claims.
