Kruzhlinin warrants plenty of respect on his handicap debut after gamely winning a maiden contest here last time, although dropping half-a-mile in trip is a concern, while Formulation certainly isn't out of it making his handicap debut off an opening mark of 108. The vote, however, goes to HAWKHILL, Tim Vaughan's only runner on the card. The offspring of Hawk Wing has impressed with novice hurdle wins at Huntingdon and Southwell recently and looks capable of shouldering top-weight on this first handicap start.

Many appear to have chances here and GAVROCHE GAUGAIN receives what is only a tentative vote. Ferdy's Murphy's representative has had his jumping problems but is fairly useful when on song (won twice for Tony Kelly) and was successful when last tackling this sort of trip at Sedgefield in November. Civil Servant produced his best effort since tackling fences when third over 3m at Huntingdon last time and looks worthy of a place on the shortlist, as does Hurricane Jack and Reg Kingdom, who both boost winning course form.

Mumbles Head looks to have obvious claims having won by 11 lengths over 3m1f at Market Rasen last month, but that form looks fairly suspect (second and fourth pulled up next time) and a 12lb rise in the ratings is harsh, so a chance is taken on the enigmatic THE HOLLINWELL. The nine-year-old has been set much stiffer assignments at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals on his last couple of starts and is now 13lb lower than when runner-up in the Listed Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle in November. Any market support for General Hardi on his first outing since beating subsequent Rowland Meyrick and Peter Marsh winner According To Pete at Catterick in January last year could well be worth noting.

The fact Philip Hobbs brings just one horse, JOSEPH MERCER, on the 950-mile round trip from his Minehead base up to Scotland looks a tip in itself. A winner between the flags, he left his debut in this sphere well behind when chasing home the useful Jump City over 2m3f at Newton Abbot last time and any further improvement is sure to see him in the thick of the action tonight. Kris Cross and Nodda High Kid both displayed a fair amount of ability in bumpers, indeed the latter beat subsequent Albert Bartlett winner Brindisi Breeze on debut, and make plenty of appeal first time over timber.

Bocamix has been in decent form over hurdles this year, winning two of his five starts, and makes plenty of appeal now sent chasing, but KARINGA QUEEN is preferred representing a Gordon Elliott stable who do particularly well with their runners here. The Karinga Bay mare emerged with plenty of credit when fifth in a 2m7f chase on her debut for this yard at Downpatrick last Friday and she is entitled to strip fitter for that first run in over three months. Rawaaj isn't the most consistent but would have a chance if finding top gear.

6

TOMMYSTEEL showed a likeable attitude when landing a hunters' chase over 3m1f at Kelso last time and, providing tonight's trip isn't on the short side, he will take some stopping in his bid to follow up. Romany Ryme rates the biggest threat on his debut in this sphere having won a couple of point-to-point events last month, while Reland appeared to run out of gas when a well-beaten fourth over 3m1f at Kelso latest and could take giant strides forward here with less emphasis on stamina.

Dj Milan makes plenty of appeal on this handicap debut having gamely won his maiden over 2m4f at Hereford last time, but TALKIN SENCE edges the vote. Stuart Coltherd's gelding produced his best effort yet when beaten a quarter of a length into second over C&D almost three weeks ago and looks certain to be in the shake-up again despite a 2lb rise in the ratings. What A Steel belied odds of 33/1 when finishing runner-up at Ayr last month and there is a chance that he will improve for that first start since December.
