The eye is immediately drawn to Maputo, who was a Group 3 winner on the Flat and was last sighted finishing a close third at Meydan in 2014. He is clearly the one to beat on what he has achieved on the level, but a 569-day absence and prohibitively short forecast odds limit his appeal for betting purposes. MR STEADFAST is an attractive alternative because he was a winner at Ballinrobe two starts back and represents a handler with a 50% strike-rate in hurdle races this season. Lady Clitico and Robin's Command are also worth noting.

ROSIE REVENUE seemed to appreciate a step up in trip when getting off the mark at Downpatrick and can land a double with her confidence buoyed. Her stablemate Triumph Davis is slipping down the weights and might do better in first-time cheekpieces, but perhaps the consistent Johnny Go represents a bigger threat after handling a rise in distance when third at Cartmel. Solway Prince can do better with his sights lowered and completes the shortlist.

XAARCET couldn't get competitive in a hurdle race at the Galway Festival earlier this month, but prior to that he chased home the progressive St Maxime at this venue. He deserves a chance over a sharper trip but faces stiff opposition from the likes of Honourable Gent, who pulled nicely clear of the remainder when runner-up at this track in July. The admirably consistent Solway Legend is respected, and Mister D can get on the premises if repeating his latest Cartmel effort.

POLITENESS was denied a hat-trick when trying a more competitive handicap at Cartmel in July but remains in excellent heart. He can get back to winning ways, but it would be dangerous to underestimate the threat posed by Mustadrik, who flopped in blinkers at Tramore but was progressive earlier this campaign. A tongue-tie could make a difference for him. Apachee Prince was in the process of running a decent race when coming down at Market Rasen and completes the shortlist.

ROMANY RYME represents the potent Gordon Elliott/Richard Johnson combination and boasts winning course form to boot. Pulled up when last sighted at Roscommon at the beginning of the month, he can be forgiven that lacklustre display given he was in good nick previously and is only 4lb higher than winning scoring over track and trip last month. Perhaps the step back up in distance will suit. Gleann Na Ndochais has been knocking on the door and is noted along with Dystonia's Revenge.

John Ferguson holds all the aces courtesy of ITTIRAD and Commissioned. The latter fared satisfactorily in the Listed Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen last time out and cannot go unconsidered, but jockey bookings suggest Ittirad is the yard's main hope and Aidan Coleman's mount lines up in search of a four-timer following yet another emphatic success at Newton Abbot. A smart performer on the Flat, he can get the better of his stable companion and 2013 Sussex/Scottish Champion Hurdle winner Court Minstrel.

CARINENA has shown steady improvement for each visit to the racecourse and shaped with plenty of promise when achieving a silver medal here last month. By no means disgraced finishing five lengths behind a well-bred John Ferguson inmate that day, connections have found their mare a real opening and she can make it fourth-time lucky. Overbury Queen is worth considering on her racecourse introduction for a shrewd operation, and Blayney Queen ran well here on her debut in July last year so is another to consider.
