Expert Analysis

A head-scratching result in terms of the winner (not the only one at 2023 Royal Ascot), but there appeared no fluke about it on the day other than that those drawn 1 to 7 might have had a small advantage over those drawn higher, due to pace rather than track bias as such. It was well-run by sprinting standards with a race finishing speed of 98.7%.

KHAADEM (120 here, 110 previously) has not shown form even close to this good since winning the 2019 Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood, for all that he has popped up from time to time in between, but had a real going day and everything panned out well for him in the event. He was taken down early and unseated before the start, was held up in rear in the slightly smaller group, travelling comfortably, then was switched left after 2f out and ran on for pressure to lead with about 60 yards to go.

SACRED (116 here, 113 previously) ran as well as she ever has, very much at home back at 6f, and indeed looking like taking some catching as she went on after 2f out (had tracked the pace going well), headed under pressure near the finish. She should continue to give a good account.

HIGHFIELD PRINCESS (112 here, 119 previously) was strictly below her very best again on what was her second start of the week, but came home first on her side of the course and is worth another chance to repeat her peak rating. She got away quickly and travelled comfortably up with the pace, disputed it overall for a while in the penultimate 1f according to sectionals but was one paced late on.

ARTORIUS (110 here, 115 previously) ran respectably to finish one place worse than he had 12 months before, a little isolated between the 2 main groups mid-race but sticking to his task all the way to the line. It was later reported that he has been retired to stud.

THE ASTROLOGIST (105 here, 109 previously) ran creditably on balance, doing plenty up front having missed half a beat at the start.

AL SUHAIL (103 here, 112 previously) shaped a bit better than the result after a 3-month break, in mid-field and keeping on without getting in a blow.

KINROSS (103+ here, 119 previously) shaped quite a bit better than the result and should be back to his best with this behind him, tracking the pace before disputing the lead briefly in the final 1f, unable to quicken and not knocked about as he faded. He won the Foret at Longchamp and British Champions Sprint here in 2022 and seems equally effective at 6f and 7f, and on soft through to firm.

COEUR DE PIERRE (102 here, 111 previously) ran no more than respectably (had shaped well at Chantilly on his reappearance), close up but tapped for toe after halfway and merely keeping on.

RUN TO FREEDOM (101 here, 111 previously) passed a few late but never got into it having been held up in last.

WELLINGTON (101 here, 118 previously) failed to give his running, awkward leaving his stall and some way back before making a few late gains. He was perfectly capable of going very close on his form against the world’s best sprinter, Lucky Sweynesse, in Hong Kong.

EMARAATY ANA (98 here, 113 previously) is difficult to catch right and lasted on the bridle only until soon after halfway, having had a breathing operation since his previous appearance.

ART POWER (93 here, 114 previously) looks good dominating lesser rivals but again came up short on a bigger stage, weakening having raced close up but a bit isolated towards the centre.

BIG INVASION (89 here, ? previously) failed to reproduce his smart US form.

SANDRINE (85 here, 106 previously) showed up reasonably well on the near side until after halfway but ultimately ran poorly.

ROHAAN (85 here, 114 previously) never looked like getting into this, edging right at one stage.

CANNONBALL (? here and previously) reared as his stall opened and unseated his rider.
