Expert Analysis
A race that has varied in standard over the years, but this edition looks one of the stronger recent ones, despite the under-performance of the two market leaders. The pace was good (finishing speed in the 102% region) and the time looks decent also.
FIRST FLOW (c161 here, 166 previously) is very smart on his day – as he showed in winning the Clarence House Chase at Ascot earlier this year, and to a large degree here – and got his act together at this longer trip to claim this good prize, held up tracking the pace, making a couple of mid-race mistakes, rousted along briefly then improving steadily to lead at the last and scoring readily.
FUNAMBULE SIVOLA (c150 here, 158 previously) shaped encouragingly and should be back to his very best with this behind him, mixing it up front and going on for sure 4 out, ridden approaching the last and headed there, not given an unduly hard time when held. He appeared to run a personal best when second to Shishkin at Aintree in April and, with time on his side, could do well just below the very top level this term.
ELDORADO ALLEN (c155 here, 152 previously) ran at least as well as he ever has, helped by the return to a longer trip with ground conditions not testing, held up in touch but beginning to be outpaced when making a mistake 5 out then rallying late in the day.
MASTER TOMMYTUCKER (c148 here, 160 previously) is none too consistent and followed a good run with a moderate one, unable to dominate and weakening from prominence 3 out.
ALLMANKIND (c129 here, 163 previously) is rather one-dimensional in his run style and performed poorly taken on up front, briefly rallying after a mistake 4 out but emptying when jumping left and untidy at the last 2. He’ll probably be back to form in one of these smaller-field affairs soon.
KEEPER HILL (c0 here, 141 previously) had plenty on and offered little, always behind and eventually pulled up.
