He takes on four previous chase winners, though, and that lack of experience might just find him out against the likes of Sausalito Sunrise and CREEPY. The former has always looked a chaser in the making and did the job in good style at Chepstow three weeks ago but the latter, another to have scored at the Welsh venue on his chasing bow, made a huge impression on that occasion and is expected to go right to the very top this season.

A typically competitive renewal with last year's winner Johns Spirit, victorious on his reappearance here last month, and the highly promising Present View seriously considered. Making his first start for the David Pipe stable, Easter Meteor takes the eye having been in the process of running a huge race prior to a penultimate fence fall last year, while Kapga De Cerisy is another fascinating contender on his first start since oozing class at Sandown just over a year ago. Indian Castle is another who could have a good year, but BUYWISE improved rapidly through the ranks last term and looks to have maintained that progression judging by a stylish hurdles success on his return to action at Ludlow last month. Sure to strip fitter for that first start since the spring, Evan Williams is expected to have his charge spot-on this afternoon and he remains a chaser of considerable potential.

Hargam features highly in the antepost betting for the Triumph Hurdle in March and it will be fascinating to see how he goes on hurdling debut for top connections. Preference, though, is for GOLDEN DOYEN, who destroyed his rivals at Warwick last time. Slick over his hurdles and a powerful traveller, he looks a juvenile to follow. L'Aigle Royal started life in the UK with an easy win at Sedgefield, and although he shoulders a penalty here he is expected to go well on a track that should suit. Unanimite was too keen for his own good in a small field last time and he can't be discounted.

Some potentially high-class sorts on show here, none more so than Willie Mullins' unbeaten five-year-old DARING CARLOTTA. She has yet to be extended in three bumper starts and looks a star in the making.
