Useful bumper performer GOD OF THE KOP was in the process of making an encouraging debut over hurdles when practically taken out jumping the second-last at Worcester 16 days ago and he could prove difficult to beat here providing that nasty experience hasn't dented his confidence. Alan King's team wasn't in the best of form when Desert Joe disappointed on his latest outing at Newbury in March and he deserves another chance, while hurdling debutants Big Society and Toby Lerone add further spice to the opener.

KNOCK A HAND is strongly fancied to make a winning debut over fences. Richard Lee's star gelding went from strength to strength last season, winning four of his five hurdle starts, and everything about the imposing 7-year-old suggests that he will do even better over the larger obstacles. Deireadh Re was only rated 4lb lower than the selection over timber but he disappointed in this sphere at Fakenham last time, so Rev It Up rates the bigger threat on his chasing bow, boosting a record of two from two (over hurdles) at this track.

The form of Back Bob Back's C&D success in March has worked out well with the runner-up and third notching up three wins between them since and he ought to go close today if in that sort of mood, but PLEIN POUVOIR looks the one to beat. The top-weight was in the decent form during the spring and Venetia Williams is expected to have him fairly wound up for this return to action. With Grace produced her best effort since sent chasing when runner-up at Ffos Las 13 days ago and is worthy of consideration despite a 6lb rise in the weights.

Mulligan's Man is unbeaten in four starts under Rules thus far and warrants plenty of respect in his bid to maintain that perfect record, while Ballybough Pat impressed when making a winning seasonal/hurdling debut on bottomless ground at Carlisle 15 days ago. The vote, however, goes to Paul Nicholls' French import WONDERFUL CHARM. He showed some smart form in that country, particularly when runner-up in the Grade 2 Prix Amadou for 4-year-olds at Auteuil in April, and this looks a shrewd move as he only keeps his novice status until November 1st.

Hada Men impressively notched up a double in seemingly competitive handicaps at Carlisle and Haydock during the spring and he must come into the reckoning now returning for new connections (was with Brian Ellison), but SALUBRIOUS is potentially a class above these. The 5-year-old son of Beneficial confirmed promise shown in bumpers when gamely winning what has turned out to be a decent novices' hurdle at Taunton in December and handed an opening mark of 129 for today's hurdling debut, he looks capable of doing some damage. Tony Star and Meganisi are others to note.

TATANIANO was last seen bolting up in this race 12 months ago and he is fancied to strike again. Eyebrows will be raised as to why he hasn't been seen on a racecourse since, but he showed last year that he goes well fresh and a 3lb rise shouldn't be enough to stop him if he can reproduce that level of performance. Kumbeshwar has been given plenty of time to recover from a nasty last-fence fall at Punchestown in April and should run a big race if his jumping holds up, while 2011 Grand Annual scorer Oiseau De Nuit cannot be ruled out either.

Michael Scudamore won this contest 12 months ago with Bounds And Leaps and he has sound claims in this year's renewal with Gunner Rose, who has gone well in defeat the last twice, but it could pay to side with FACTOTUM. Rated a 135 over hurdles in his pomp, he is clearly not the force of old but is well handicapped on his best form off a mark of 95, as highlighted when just outbattled over 3m2f at Huntingdon latest. With the drop in trip in his favour, he can go one better off the same mark. Royal Mile rates a leading contender on his seasonal debut having shaped well off similar marks over shorter last term.
