CHAMPAGNE WEST, bought from Brightwells at Cheltenham for a sizeable 120,000 pounds last year, followed up his comfortable success between the flags with a solid introductory effort under Rules, finishing a narrow second to a subsequent Grade 2 NH flat participant Monkey Kingdom, and he looks to have the necessary class to earn his stable's second success in this race in three years. Two contenders racing with penalties complete the shortlist in Flemenson, a 190,000-pound son of Flemensfirth that followed up a point-to-point win with victory at Uttoxeter, and the more experienced Billy No Name, who hacked up at Wincanton last time.

Two trainers have farmed this race in recent times, and Philip Hobbs, who has won four renewals in the last 10 years, has a strong contender in SEA ISLAND PEARL. She was outclassed by a subsequent Listed entrant last time but put seven lengths between herself and the rest of the field and can be on the premises again. Paul Nicholls, a winner of five of the last seven runnings, has an interesting contender in Broomfield, who returns from two years off but showed promise in his early efforts, while Doctor Harper couldn't land a blow in the Champion Bumper but looks a useful prospect nonetheless.

CUE CARD kicked off a memorable season with a hugely impressive victory in this race last year, leaving a cast of useful rivals trailing in his wake, and having gone on to land two Grade 1 races, including the Ryanair Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, and a running out a creditable four and a half-length second to one of the best horses in training in Sprinter Sacre at Aintree, he is tough to oppose here. William's Wishes is an exciting prospect who is lightly raced and undefeated in chases, while Module wasn't disgraced when stepped up in grade at Cheltenham and could have an outside squeak.

It is tricky to know what Dark Lover achieved when his main rival fell on his reappearance, but there is a strong chance he would have filled the runner-up spot anyway, so CLARET CLOAK, who hacked up on his chasing bow, has possibly achieved more. Representing a yard in decent form, he is fancied to double-up here. Manyriverstocross is an interesting newcomer to chasing as a Grade 2 winner over timber and he has gone well fresh, including when finishing third in the Greatwood Hurdle a few years ago.

WELL HELLO THERE was in the process of running a good race when falling at Ffos Las recently, but had won with a tongue-tie applied for the first time the run before and with cheekpieces added here, there could more improvement to come. Kind Of Easy landed a comfortable success with first-time cheekpieces applied at Fontwell a couple of weeks ago and can continue to progress, while Gas Line Boy made an encouraging start under Rules and is a point-to-point winner that could have more to offer at this level.

ROYAL NATIVE appeared to bump into a good one when second to a horse now officially rated 132 at Fontwell and having put four lengths between himself and the rest of the field, he is fancied to break his duck over timber. Tarvini has been kept busy this summer and followed up a Newton Abbot success with a decent runner-up finish at Chepstow last month so looks a player, while Storm Alert is a C&D winner who rattled the crossbar last time and can be on the premises again.
