MIDNIGHT LIRA gets the tentative vote in the opener. She arrives here on the back of a career best performance, when third over an extended 3m at Taunton, and James Best is one of the more accomplished jockeys in this line-up. Home Run bounced back to form in the cheekpieces at Newton Abbot latest and he warrants respect with the same piece of tack used here, while Arron Kennedy got a fine tune out of Ripoff the last day.

FINGAL BAY should prove a cut above these rivals. There was no disgrace in finishing second behind Dynaste (winner of a Grade 2 contest since) at Cheltenham latest and, although seen as an out-and-out three-miler, he can get away with it in this company. Coole River (engaged to run at Wincanton yesterday) is a dual Grade 2 winner over hurdles and is fancied to beat Chartreux into second spot, despite returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Desperate Dex will be fancied by many to complete the hat-trick, but LORD TOMNODDY could have his measure. Kim Bailey's charge ran out an impressive winner on his handicap/seasonal debut over 3m at Ascot last month and expected improvement may help him defy an 8lb rise. Our Island is very good on his day, but he disappointed at Wetherby latest and connections now reach for the visor.

Orabora was probably a fortunate winner on his hurdling debut at Chepstow last month (left in front when leader fell at the last) and he looks slightly vulnerable under a penalty today, possibly leaving the door open for the Nick Williams-trained THE ITALIAN YOB. He caught the eye when finishing third behind a couple of useful novices' over C&D last time and any further improvement is sure to see him go very close in this contest. Key To The West is another to consider.

It could pay to side with IRISH BUCCANEER on his hurdling/seasonal debut. The form of his Chepstow bumper success looks fairly solid (fourth has notched up a couple of hurdle wins since) and Philip Hobbs will have left nothing to chance in terms of schooling sessions. Diamond Life displayed a fair level of ability in three starts last term and commands respect now returning, while Best Director and Presenting Arms make up the shortlist.

THE BIG FREEZE appears to have been found a great opportunity to open his account over the larger obstacles. He produced by far and away his best effort since sent chasing when runner-up over this trip at Musselburgh last time and any further progression can help him defy a 3lb rise. Musical Wedge looks the obvious danger having bolted up at Taunton eight days ago, while Russian Song could go well at longer odds.

Vibrato Valtat must come into the reckoning having comfortably won a French bumper some three months ago, while any market support for the Robert Waley-Cohen-owned newcomer Storm Lantern would be of interest. The vote, however, goes to ALLONS ZEE. He wasn't knocked about when finishing a promising third on his racecourse debut over this C&D in October and the 3-year-old son of Zerpour should have learnt plenty from that experience.
