Paul Nicholls' charge, GULLIBLE GORDON, is sure to be popular having gone close on both hurdle starts and he looks the safest bet. However, Tricky Trickster, who won a point-to-point on his sole public outing in April, makes his NH debut for the in-form Nigel Twiston-Davies stable and it would be no surprise to see him go close. Job One won a 3m novice handicap hurdle last time out in June but has no margin for error under a penalty for that win.

Another heat in which there is sure to be plenty of support for Paul Nicholls' charge, The Nightingale, who found only one too good in a Grade 2 'bumper' when bidding to make it two from two in that sphere. A big hurdling bow is expected but there may be more value to be found with HECTOR'S CHOICE, a Flat winner who scored on his hurdling bow in France. Phillip Hobbs thinks plenty of him and he can put his hurdling experience to good use on his UK debut. Smart flat performer Samurai Way and dual NH flat winner Shalone are others to consider.

All eyes will be on Straw Bear, the dual Grade 1 hurdle winner who makes his chasing bow this afternoon, but he didn't go well fresh on his seasonal debut last year and, at the forecast odds, may be worth taking on with fellow chasing debutant PASCO. Ruby Walsh's mount showed ability in winning two of his four hurdle starts last term but he is a big sort and has always looked much more of a chaser. The yard have won two of the four runnings of this race and he is sure have been well prepared for it. Other chasing newcomers Or Bleu and Sir Harry Ormesher look the best of the remainder.

Although Gone To Lunch finished around 5-lengths ahead of THE TOTHER ONE when second in a Grade 1 Sefton Novices' Hurdle in April, he disappointed when failing to justify favouritism on his chase return over this C&D last week and the vote goes to Paul Nicholls' charge today. Winner of four hurdles and a 'bumper', his only two defeats came at the highest level and he appears to have a bright future over the larger obstacles. Spare Cash rates next best.

Mister Wiseman has looked a much-improved performer since his wind operation and should have his say, while Double The Trouble was a comfortable winner in this grade over 2m last time out in April. However, they both have no margin for error off their current marks, especially the latter who returns from a break on a 14lb higher mark, and preference is for DALYAN DANCER. Phillip Hobbs' point-to-point winner is improving and finished a decent fourth in a 2m1f event on his seasonal bow here recently; he's entitled to have more to offer today and looks feasibly treated at the foot of the weights on his handicap debut.

The penny looks to have dropped with PALMERS PEAK as he ran out a comfortable winner over a 3m1f chase at Kelso on his latest outing in May. With further progress on the cards, he could be well treated on his handicap debut and gets the tentative vote. Oracle Des Mottes has shown ability in hunters' chases and between the flags and is very much one to consider on his first outing for Paul Nicholls, while Smoke Trail left some moderate efforts behind to score at Wincanton latest (Roussea 6th) and has claims if in the same mood. The hat-trick seeking Beehawk is interesting on his return from a lay-off

All of these are making their racecourse debut and the betting market should obviously be monitored closely for any clues. Cesium, Falsino, Shalamiyr and King Of Dubai all represent respected yards that know how to land events of this nature, but slight preference is for CILL RIALAIG. His stable is better known for Flat runners but has a good record in 'bumpers' and the booking of Robert Thornton suggests connections mean business.
