A consolation race for those missing the cut for the Stewards' Cup. MYMUMSAYSIMTHEBEST has fewer miles on the clock than a typical six-year-old and has improved nicely this term both on turf and on artificial surfaces. Gary Moore's charge is 8lb higher than when scoring at Kempton last time but, in his present mood, is taken to shrug off a rise in grade to land the spoils. Valery Borzov ran his best race for two years when narrowly denied at Carlisle last time and is feared most as he remains well treated on the pick of his form. Others to consider are Thunderball, who has struck up a fine understanding with Leonna Mayor and remains open to further improvement over 6f, and Noverre To Go, who has run a series of disappointing races this term but has slipped to a mark 8lb lower than when fifth in the Stewards' Cup itself 12 months ago.
It remains to be seen whether stall 26 proves problematical, but Thunderball makes plenty of appeal even so. The similarly red-hot Mymumsaysimthebest, drawn on the opposite side of the track, is also respected, as are Golden Desert, Baby Strange and Valery Borzov, though the last-named is best on ground softer than good.

Captain John Nixon was allowed to set a moderate pace when making all to score at Kempton last time but dominating this larger field, which contains runners of a higher calibre, is likely to be no easy task. Activate flopped in the Northumberland Plate last time but is open to a little bit more improvement if back to his best, a comment that also applies to Harlestone Times, who finished well-held in the same race. However, the vote goes to VERDANT, who didn't get the race run to suit when fourth to Jukebox Jury at Newmarket last time and could improve over this longer trip now fitted with a first-time visor. At an each-way price, Mystery Star makes some appeal if his latest effort can be overlooked, as he had previously stayed on well for third in the Chester Cup behind Overturn and will appreciate the return to better ground.
Plenty of these flopped in the Northumberland Plate, with Harlestone Times expected to bounce back given his record here, but Sharaayeen still looked a horse on the up when unlucky in the Old Newton Cup and is given the nod upped to a trip which should suit. Captain John Nixon also makes the shortlist.

Crystal Capella was given too much to do on her reappearance at Haydock but benefitted from a sensible ride when returning to winning ways in the Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket earlier in the month. However, she is taking on some top class fillies and mares this afternoon and preference is for SNOW FAIRY, who is taken to deny Midday a hat-trick of victories in this contest. The selection is entitled to strip fitter for her last run in the Eclipse when finishing a well-held fourth behind So You Think as it was her first outing since December, when landing the Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin. That capped off a fine 2010 for Ed Dunlop's dual Oaks winner and she is taken to fend off five-time Group 1 winner Midday, who was turned over at short odds by Misty For Me in the Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh last time.
The absence of Misty For Me has taken some of the gloss of what looked a very good renewal of this race, and with her out of the way Midday is taken to land the spoils for the third consecutive year. Snow Fairy should be the better for her reappearance and can push her closest.

For sprint handicap fans it doesn't get any better than this and another pulsating renewal of the Stewards' Cup looks in prospect. Hoof It continues to progress sharply and looks the obvious starting point after his Sky Bet Dash victory at York last weekend. Mick Easterby's charge looks Pattern class and should give a good account despite the fact he is lumbered with a penalty but there are some fascinating entrants lurking further down the weights, none more so than CROWN CHOICE. Walter Swinburn's six-year-old gelding is lightly raced for his age and has shown improved form since being dropped back to 6f this year, landing a C&D handicap a shade cosily in May, a victory for which he is only 3lb higher now. Providing conditions do not deteriorate, a big run appears likely. Colonel Mak ran a blinder in the Scottish Stewards' Cup at Hamilton last time and, off the same mark, is another high on the shortlist for each-way players with Jamie Spencer a notable jockey booking for the David Barron yard. Others to consider include the strong-travelling Edinburgh Knight, who appears to have been campaigned lightly with a big prize in mind, and Mac's Power, who continues to progress into his fourth year of racing and warrants the utmost respect for Wokingham-winning trainer James Fanshawe.
The first race may offer more draw clues but towards the centre has been the place to be in this in recent years, and the thriving Hoof It looks ideally birthed. Victoire de Lyphar is nearby and seems the pick of the David Nicholls sextet, while Mac's Power shouldn't be discounted despite his pitch right on the far side. Brave Prospector could go well at a bigger price.

SPORTS SECTION ran a race full of promise over this trip at Newmarket on his racecourse debut earlier in the month and is taken to go one better with the benefit of that experience now behind him. Mickdaam, third in the same contest, wouldn't need to find much improvement to reverse the placings and is feared most as there is undoubtedly better to come from Richard Fahey's Dubawi colt, who fetched 360,000gns as a yearling. Course specialist Truism ran another fine race at this venue when third to Red Gulch on Tuesday and is unlikely to be far away but it might be worth siding with GUEST BOOK, who finished ahead of him in second that day and looks to have been rejuvenated by a short break. Mark Johnston's charge was holding his form well during April, when he raced four times, and showed last time on his return from a three-month absence that he is still on the up. Course winner Kathleen Frances and Fastnet Storm, who is capable of further improvement for David Barron, are others to consider.
