If plenty of rain arrives then the chances of Miss Van Gogh and Motdaw will be enhanced, but they would still be vulnerable to some less exposed types. Trainnah will obviously be a popular choice given her connections and back-to-back wins in recent months. That said, the form of her latest win is not particularly strong and it's an obvious concern that the blinkers are applied despite winning last time. Zest is another who has not yet reached her full potential, but to achieve that she looks in need of 1m4f. The one to side with is SHAFAFYA, who was an impressive winner of her last start over this trip at Ripon in June. Since then the daughter of Shamardal has chased home the progressive Dubka over 1m4f on soft ground at Doncaster and she would have found 1m on a fast surface too much of a speed test last time.

The Frankel pair of Cunco and Frankuus may not quite have go on as once was expected and both have questions to answer after a poor effort last time. That said, neither of them can be discounted and they could represent some each-way value. MONTATAIRE has shown significant improvement in recent months and he blew away his rivals (including Cunco) in the Listed Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury last month, for which he carries a 3lb penalty. There is no reason why he cannot continue to progress and he sets a high standard to aim aim this afternoon. Bahamas and Red Ensign are two less exposed types and it would not be a big surprise to see them in the mix today.

A wide-open contest and it is hard to confidently rule out any of these. Convey looks sure to be popular once again today but he is not one to fully trust and any rain would hurt his chances today. Whereas, MITCHUM SWAGGER will relish any cut in the ground and the son of Paco Boy looks to have outstanding claims this afternoon. The drop back to 7f did not suit last time out and he would have gone very close to winning the Royal Hunt Cup with a better trip. The consistent Custom Cut merits each-way consideration as he rarely runs a bad race, while similar comments apply to Gabrial and the penalised Breton Rock. The three-year-old First Selection cannot be discounted down in grade today.

On paper, this looks an excellent renewal of the Old Borough Cup with several of these up and coming stayers with potential to be better than their handicap marks suggest. MAGIC CIRCLE appears to have been laid out for this since winning a handicap at York in early July in decisive fashion and the drop back down two furlongs shouldn't prove to be any inconvenience for Ralph Beckett's charge. Shrewd ran an excellent race in the Ebor when second behind Heartbreak City and has to enter calculations again along with the unexposed Walpole who appeals as being a lot better than his handicap mark suggests. Shakopee and Montaly are both well-fancied but both come with their risks. The former didn't appear the most genuine when runner-up to Barsanti at York and also didn't shape as though a step up to 1m6f would suit, while the latter travels strongly through his races but flatters to deceive when asked for an effort. Two that merit consideration at bigger prices are Intense Tango, who has built up a good rapport with Clifford Lee, and Gold Prince on his Old Newton Cup effort when second behind Tawdeea.

El Astronaute would have won much more handsomely than the official margin of a half-length indicated had he not hung down the camber at Epsom last time and it will be interesting to see if he can build on that effort returned to a more conventional track. The booking of Jamie Spencer for the thriving John Quinn team certainly catches the eye, but of more interest is MICKEY, who was nutted on the line at Newmarket last week but could gain compensation now cutting back in trip. Lightscameraction appears well handicapped on his all-weather form, while Irish import Kasbah is worth monitoring closely in the betting now debuting for Robert Cowell.

All eyes here will be on Limato after his career-best performance in the Nunthorpe against an almost unbeatable mare in such conditions at York. Henry Candy's charge is short enough though and with rain forecast for Saturday, it might be worth taking a chance on THE TIN MAN. James Fanshawe's string are in much better form now and his stable star has been unfortunate with two setbacks earlier in the season. He receives the opportunity to showcase his class now and could prove to be the value of the race. Quiet Reflection was one of the success stories of Royal Ascot when claiming the Commonwealth Cup with relative ease and ran well behind Limato at Newmarket in the July Cup with conditions that didn't suit, while the progressive Dancing Star is also worthy of consideration in an excellent renewal.

CARRY ME HOME improved for a try at 1m4f last time out and shaped as though a further increase would play to his strengths. The booking of Frankie Dettori for the first time suggests that another big run is imminent and it would be no surprise to see the three-year-old shrug off a 5lb rise and take this. The Graduate is a reliable performer who could build on his recent battling Newbury success, while Evening Hush is an interesting contender on stable debut for Evan Williams. Marmajuke Bay is the only course winner in the field and has been touted as a horse who could go for the Ebor next year and merits respect on that basis alone.
