Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls have won the last four runnings of this race between them and they appear to have a strong hand again today with Zarkandar, Tonic Mellysse and MOLOTOF. Daryl Jacob's mount is of huge interest first time under NH rules being half-brother to top-class flat performer Zarkava but, having won the race last year, leading owner Simon Munir clearly wants the strike again. Although it's difficult to choose between his pair, the last mentioned represents the winning formula from 12 months ago and edges the vote. The betting market could prove best guide, however.

This looks a great opportunity for CAPTAIN CHRIS to open his account over fences. A 146-rated hurdler, he has looked even better since tackling the larger obstacles and appeared to benefit from climbing up to an extended 2m4f when chasing home leading Arkle fancy Medermit in the Grade 1 Scilly Isles at Sandown last time. A win here puts him in line for a tilt at one of next months' big prizes. American Trilogy did the job nicely over C&D earlier this month and he represents the stable that have won the last five runnings of this race, so is clearly a much bigger threat than Adams Island.

A fiercely competitive renewal and BAKBENSCHER edges the vote representing an in-form Alan King stable. Although often let down by his jumping, there is no doubting that this son of Bob Back has a serious engine and he looked better than ever when beating the well regarded Definity over this trip at Exeter 13 days ago. A 5lb penalty won't be enough to stop him if in the same mood but he does need to have a good day in the jumping department. Nacarat produced a career best performance when landing this prize a couple of years ago and it's interesting that he sports a tongue-tie for the first time, while Fistral Beach won cosily on his comeback run at Wincanton last month and is sure to have plenty of supporters with the champion jockey onboard. Quinz, Hey Big Spender and Tatenen are others worthy of consideration.

Simon Munir doesn't appear to make many bad purchases and one of his most recent investments, Celtus, commands respect having won three hurdle races in France, but SIRE DE GRUGY looks the one to beat. Gary Moore's star gelding stepped up on a pleasing debut over hurdles (second behind subsequent Grade 2 winner Bobs Worth) when demolishing his rivals at Fakenham and Folkestone respectively and he can take this step up in grade in his stride. Pullyourfingerout and Toubab both disappointed on their most recent appearances but cannot be written off just yet.

It could pay to side with COUNTY ZEN in what looks a wide open contest. Representing the Philip Hobbs/Richard Johnson combination that won this race 12 months ago with Clova Island, he belied his odds of 25-1 when fourth in Grade 3 company at Sandown three weeks ago and the handicapper has kindly left him alone. Mr Hudson is a fascinating runner with only three runs under his belt and could well turn out to be 'thrown in' on his handicap debut, while Benfleet Boy and Rollwiththepunches are others with solid win claims but both have plenty of weight to carry.

Forget It is on an upward curve over fences and he must be respected in his bid for a hat-trick but he has been raised 15lb for his two chasing victories and he might have to give best to RORY BOY today. Nigel Twiston-Davies' gelding has not been at his best so far this season but drying ground conditions will be in his favour and he is edging back to a competitive handicap mark. Cruchain, Soixante and Coup Royale are others to consider.

TOUR D'ARGENT ran out an impressive winner on his debut at Newbury over 1m5f last month and, although he carries a penalty for that success today, he could still take plenty of beating. Diamond Sweeper shaped nicely first time out at Huntingdon last month and he is entitled to improve for that experience so he commands respect. The two Paul Nicholls-trained newcomers, War Of The World and Sleeping Tree, are worthy of consideration and Nigel Twiston-Davies' debutant, Oscar Magic, is also considered.
