Gibralfaro will be a well supported favourite and he is the most likely winner of this contest, but there is a chance that his form from last time could be overestimated. He did beat Connetable that day, and he subsequently beat Rayvin Black in a Listed contest, but that rival had not run since May 2015 and was more than entitled to need the run. Also, Gibralfaro had the benefit of being race ready following his debut UK run the month before. St Saviour is unbeaten over hurdles but his form is a way off what is required to win this and the favourite's biggest dangers are likely to come from a band of talented newcomers. PILANSBERG was by some way the best of these on the Flat, as his form behind Vazirabad is top-class. Zubayr has clearly shown plenty at home as he has featured in the Triumph betting for a while without running. Khezerabad represents connections who do well with their juveniles and he also merits respect.

It is probably best not to assess this race as a Grade 2 as it will not take form of that level to win. MON SUCCESSEUR is the highest rated of these and he represents a yard in top form at the moment while Paul Nicholls has supplied the winner of this race seven times in the last 10 years. The Saint James disappointed here over Christmas but the form of his debut, when he chased home Vyta Du Roc, was boosted last weekend. Cloonacool will probably not be good enough to win this but on their best form, Killala Quay and Twelve Roses would go well.

Marracudja arguably has the best form in the race with his bronze medal finish a red-hot novice event over C&D (second, fifth and sixth have all won since) and he ought to run well, while Welsh Shadow disappointed in the Tolworth Hurdle at a time when Dan Skelton's team were going through a barren spell and he is probably better judged on his comfortable Listed success at Haydock before that. The vote, however, goes to exciting prospect WINTER ESCAPE. He has looked well above average in two starts at Doncaster, winning with the minimum amount of fuss on both occasions, and it's a case of the sky is the limit for him at the moment. Oceane has questions to answer after disappointing in Grade 2 company at Cheltenham's Open Meeting while Cold March is seemingly a better horse over fences.

It is interesting that Richard Johnson gets off CHAMPAGNE WEST to ride Tom George's Roc D'apsis, who goes up in trip and grade, but Tom O'Brien has ridden the son of Westerner on more than one occasion and the Philip Hobbs-trained gelding is well worth siding with. Fourth in the 2014 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle, he ran a blinder behind progressive stable companion Village Vic on his return from 315 days off the track at Cheltenham in December and was tanking in a similar Grade 3 there last month before making an serious error four out which resulted in him being pulled up. He will have been the subject of a schooling session or two since and he may still be on the right side of the handicapper. Le Reve saves his best performances for Sandown and here and, second behind Rocky Creek in last year's renewal, Lucy Wadham's charge arrives buoyed by his taking success at the Esher track three weeks ago. Theatre Guide has performed admirably behind Smad Place in the Hennessy Gold Cup and Grade 2 BetBright Trial Chase the last twice and he is noted along with Thomas Brown, who is two wins from three starts over fences and going handicapping for the first time in this discipline off what looks a decent mark, and Sky Bet Chase scorer Ziga Boy.

MCCABE CREEK opened his account over hurdles over the extended 2m3f at Doncaster last time and is a potential improver now granted this stiffer test. Alan King's charge probably won a shade cosily last time as his rider lost an iron at the last. Clean Sheet is unexposed and expected to build on his tame handicap debut effort on his seasonal bow at Cheltenham, while recent Huntingdon second Poker School, Ludlow winner Kublai and Sir Ivan, who wears a first-time tongue-tie, are expected to put up some resistance.

Cernunnos is the obvious starting point as he looks sure to go well despite shouldering top weight. A 9lb rise for his latest win may not stop him and he will need to win today to stand a chance of getting into a handicap at Cheltenham. That said, DE KERRY MAN could offer some value against the likely favourite, as he arrives here having not completed on both starts this season. Last time out he clearly did not stay and was very tired when falling at the last while appearing unfortunate to part with his jockey the time before. He is back down at a suitable trip and the handicapper has dropped him 3lb, which looks very generous as he stood little chance last time. Ericht will appreciate this better ground and is certainly on a workable mark.

Berce, Azzerti and Sulamani The Late are all interesting newcomers but it will be a little surprising if one of the experienced runners don't emerge on top. Drumcliff is certainly bred to have plenty of ability, being a half-brother to dual Grade 1 winner Simonsig, and he overcame greenness to win readily on his debut at Taunton. That experience certainly won't have been lost on him and he warrants plenty of respect in his bid to complete the double, but slight preference is for hat-trick seeking CRIQ ROCK. The form of his latest Ascot success took a big boost when the runner-up won next time and, with three runs under his belt, he should be a lot more streetwise than the majority of these. Like the selection, Templeross has experience on his side and he could barely have won any easier at Uttoxeter last time, while Cheltenham third The Blue Bomber adds further spice to the contest.
