Most of these are pretty exposed and it might be worth taking a punt on JANET'S PEARL off what looks a feasible mark for her handicap debut. She has only landed a seller since going over timber but has shown enough to suggest a competitive run off this perch in the weights. Momkinzain is the other handicap debutant and could be interesting but C&D winner, Leith Walk, and Northern Acres look more likely sorts in view of their reliability and consistency.

It will be fascinating to see if the money comes again for Raining Horse. Backed into short-priced favouritism here last time, the James Ewart charge came to grief at the seventh to leave him with the unenviable record of having failed to complete in four of his last five outings. He obviously has ability, but HURRICANE JACK scored with something in hand here last time and looks an altogether safer option despite an 8lb hike for that victory. Former hunter chaser Definite Appeal completes the shortlist.

BOURNE showed a good attitude when making a successful hurdling debut at Catterick and the former useful Luca Cumani-trained Flat handicapper can preserve his unbeaten record here. He was a better sort on the level than Eagle Rock but it would not surprise to see the latter, runner-up in both his juvenile hurdle starts, put up a strong challenge in receipt of 18lb, not taking into account Henry Brooke's claim. Kaolak and Civil Unrest look next best, both having shown promise over timber.

SOPRANO, equally proficient over hurdles and fences, has confirmed recently that he's far more effective over a distance of ground and should give a good account with everything appearing to be in his favour. His last success came over timber at Kelso on good ground in November and he should prove a tough nut to crack in his current form. Vallani finds winning hard but continues to perform most creditably and should give it another good shot off this mark. Andreo Bambaleo should not be underestimated either.

A really excellent highlight race for a good purse and GORDONSVILLE can keep the prize on home soil on a track where he has already enjoyed considerable success. The consistent dual-purpose performer scored here in early December and can remain competitive off a 7lb higher mark. Marsh Warbler may have top weight but he's really progressive and ran a cracker when a close-up fifth in The Ladboroke last time. Expect another competitive performance, with Desert Cry and Palawi also considered.

It might be worth chancing JOHN FORBES at the weights. He's unbeaten (2-2) over fences and was in excellent form on the level in the summer, whilst a recent sharpener on the Fibresand should see him spot-on for this assignment - his handicap debut over fences. Quicuyo is in fine form at present but the handicapper will have his say sooner or later, while similar comments are attributed to Quito Du Tresor, up 8lb for his latest win at Ascot. Phidippides cannot be excluded from calculations.

Keep an eye on the market with both Nicky Richards and Donald McCain unveiling newcomers in Abbey Garth and Walk Like A Man respectively. Narrow preference is for the former, but GEORGE FERNBECK hasn't been beaten at all far in his two outings and can make the most of his racecourse experience, especially as he receives plenty of weight from the two aforementioned contenders. Irish raider Mill Bay showed up well enough on his debut to warrant consideration.
