A tricky handicap opener for punters to untangle but it might be worth giving AVONVALLEY another chance now reunited with softened ground. Her last success came at Catterick this time last year on easy ground and most recent performances have suggested she has a big run up her sleeve off this mark. Cloth Ears arrives with a similar profile and must be respected while last year's winning jockey Silvestre De Sousa can get competitive again aboard Fair Bunny.

Distance winner UNCLE TIMMY remains well treated off a mark of 52 and while his most recent effort at Redcar can be forgiven, form at Catterick the time before has taken a nice boost as runner-up Look Here's Lady has since come out to score in similar company at Wolverhampton. Princess Banu is beginning to get the hang of things now and shouldn't be overlooked along with White Spirit.

Many well regarded yards represented in this maiden contest and a positive market move for the well-bred newcomers, Sunpass and Aquilla will be worth taking seriously. GREY MIRAGE makes particular appeal, however, and can benefit from having had a run. The colt was well fancied here on debut when failing to justify favouritism but with improvement likely, he could play a serious part in proceedings. Key Appointment and Tantamount rate best of the rest.

Division two of the maiden and Marco Botti looks to have another strong chance with the colt, LELAPS. The son of Mr Greeley handled testing conditions at Haydock very well on debut and the forecast soft ground just might play into his hands. Anomaly is another to consider closely for the in form Mohammed Al Zarooni and while Cubanita shaped well on debut, the Mark Johnston inmate Teide Peak can benefit from having had two attempts.

The highlight on the card can go the way of KING TORUS. The Group 2 winner is expected to relish this drop back to 1m and while soft ground is a slight concern, he is worth another chance now eased in class. Sarrsar can boast strong handicap form and is another to take seriously while the hat-trick seeking Ancient Greece and consistent Stevie Thunder are others who should not be ruled out at the shortlist stage.

With underfoot conditions most certainly in her favour, SMART STEP can continue on an upward curve despite having been handed a 7lb rise in the ratings. All three of her victories have come on soft and heavy ground and there is clearly plenty more to come from the daughter of Montjeu. Barista might be of particular interest to each-way punters, likewise Sky Diamond but the distance winner Blue Maisey looks the main threat to the selection.

CARRAGOLD takes a notable drop in class here and having been dropped 1lb in the ratings, the Mel Brittain charge can regain the winning trend. The gelded son of Diktat ran a cracker at Hamilton three starts ago off 64 under a 6lb penalty and a return to that form should see him go very close. Focail Maith bounced back to his best latest, and looks the main threat to the selection but Carinya cannot be overlooked.

DESERT VISION looked out of his depth at York when last sighted but this drop in class is expected to suit. The Mick Easterby representative was forced to carry a 6lb penalty on that occasion and this assignment off a revised mark of 74 looks a much more realistic one. Amazing Blue Sky sets the form standard and has every chance despite the burden of top weight, while of the others, Hidden Glory is interesting.
