In an open contest, it might pay to side with Irish raider SOUTH WING. He was disappointing last time at Kilbeggan and is up 10lb on his 2m 1f success here before that but scored comfortably that day and could be suited by this trip. The danger could be Grandad Bill, a winner on the Flat at Ayr latest and exceptionally well weighted on his winning hurdle form. Baccalaureate has plenty of weight now but the Stratford winner makes the long trip up from Gloucestershire and shouldn't be ruled out.

OVERTURN, winner of the Chester Cup on the Flat in May and not far away in the Goodwood Cup last month, is up 15lb for his most recent hurdling success but was a very comfortable winner over this trip at Galway last summer and third in the Scottish Champion Hurdle. He looks too good for these rivals. General Miller hasn't been out since a poor effort at Cheltenham last November but was a Grade 2 winner last spring and looks the danger. Noble Alan seems to have lost his way over fences but shouldn't be overlooked back over timber.

Although Steel Magnate fell over hurdles last time out, he has been placed in chases off this mark on his last three visits here and must come into the reckoning. Restoration just missed out over C&D latest and poses a real threat here despite a 4lb rise in the weights. Harry Flashman is running well but also rising in the weights and preference is for ASHFIELD'S DREAM, who lost his way last season but is well treated on his Market Rasen win on his chasing debut in November. If he's refreshed from his break, he could prove too good here.

It's hard to see beyond LIBERATE for the answer to this. Philip Hobbs' gelding, well held on the Flat latest at Goodwood, could hardly have been more impressive than when scoring over 2m7f at Worcester in June on his chasing debut. A repeat performance here should be good enough to land the spoils. Cottage Oak scored on his chasing debut at Down Royal and continues to improve but looks to have plenty to find with the selection, while Definite Dawn was second at Uttoxeter first time over fences but beaten a long way and needs to improve.

It has to be considered significant that Nicky Henderson sends LIEUTENANT MILLER on the trek from Lambourn and he is taken to build on a solid success in an ordinary Newton Abbot novice hurdle. He still looked pretty green that day and looks the sort to progress with his racing. What A Steel is far more streetwise and battle-hardened and should mount a decent challenge to the southern raider for the Whillans team, while money for either Irish raider - Man In Black or Sir Walter Raleigh - would need to be heeded. Mavalenta cannot be discounted either off the bottom rung in a tricky little heat.

MANGER HANAGMENT wouldn't have to be anything special to concede weight all round to make a winning debut over the larger obstacles. He's gone well here on both previous visits and Gordon Elliott is highly adept at mixing hurdling and chasing with stable inmates. Lodgician looked sure to pick up an ordinary handicap chase during the summer before blotting his copybook when pulling up at Newton Abbot this month. He's the danger if putting that blemish behind him. Balnagore was beaten when falling at Market Rasen but did the job nicely enough at Bangor the time before.

This looks destined to go the way of the Irish with UNDERTHEBOARDWALK taken to supplement recent Roscommon gains. He should be even more suited to this track and is preferred to Bachelor Lad, whom he comfortably holds on a line through London Bridge. Priors Gold is being kept busy and comes here on the back of a useful effort at Bellewstown just a couple of days ago. He should go well once again, while Reaping The Reward looks the best hope for the home team after a comfortable course success here in late June, albeit over a notably longer trip.

COURT LEXI sets the standard in a fascinating bumper. The filly has raced exclusively at Downpatrick and after scoring with any amount in hand under Nina Carberry earlier in the month, she is hard to oppose in this follow-up attempt. Fellow Irish raider, Jamesson, made a pleasing debut when filling the minor placing at Ballinrobe last month and the experience should not be lost on the Bishop Of Cashel gelding, who rates the obvious threat. However, three interesting debutants representing good bumper yards are worth a market check, with Gutenberg preferred to And He's Dreaming and Anna's Arch at this stage.
