On more than one occasion this year, SAFE INVESTMENT has proved exactly that and, when a close-up second in a conditional jockeys' handicap chase here in November, the seven-year-old indicated there could be another big run up his sleeve. He has received a 5lb hike in the ratings for that effort but the talented David Bass takes off a useful 3lb in the saddle and Lawney Hill's charge is taken to go one better. Pingaro De La Vire boasts winning C&D form and is another for the shortlist, along with the improving Grand Article.

In an intriguing maiden hurdle, CLOSE HOUSE gets the nod. The David Pipe charge gave a good account of himself when third over timber earlier this month and, having finished within four lengths of the exciting Montbazon at Doncaster in March, he is expected to go very close in this. Sunglasses is the obvious danger to the selection having ran with promise in a Worcester bumper earlier this year but while he is likely to know his task, he may just be in need of the run. Castletown Bridge is another to consider closely.

Despite having shown signs of promise so far, Silver Roque remains a maiden after eight starts and would appear to need respite from the handicapper. For that reason, THE LAODICEAN is preferred now eased 5lb in the ratings. The Caroline Bailey charge wasn't disgraced here in early November when a game runner-up and the extra three furlongs is taken to do the trick. Mr Ironman appears to have it all to do at the weights despite having winning C&D form in the book, while Deputy Dog arrives with genuine claims for the Jonjo O'Neill yard.

The form of VALID REASON's Ascot success was franked at Cheltenham last weekend, albeit in fortuitous circumstances, when the Paul Nicholls-trained Deireadh Re benefitted from a final-flight blunder from Sea Of Thunder. The Dean Ivory inmate shouldn't be phased by any cut in the ground and has already proved he has what it takes to serve it up to one of Nicky Henderson's. Tony Dinozzo represents the Lambourn-based handler this time around and, with AP McCoy in the saddle, he shouldn't be overlooked on his hurdling debut. Porgym is rated 81 on the Flat and makes the most appeal of the others.

RATE OF KNOTS looked in need of a step up in trip at Ffos Las when runner-up on her seasonal reappearance last month and, now granted exactly that, the Jonjo O'Neill charge would appear well handicapped off this 2lb higher mark. Ammunition represents the in-form Nigel Twiston-Davies yard and, despite a recent C&D flop, the veteran chaser looks back down to a workable mark and could go close. Picture In The Sky and Upham Atom are also of interest.

The handicapper appears to have given ROMNEY MARSH a chance having been dropped her 3lb in the ratings and, while quicker ground looks to suit most, she has run well on softened ground in the past and should be up to landing this prize. Winning distance form is another positive for the Rebecca Curtis charge, who has being plying his trade over further in the recent times, but Shelomoh sets a good form standard and shouldn't be overlooked, along with Meneur, who has threatened a big performance.

A typically competitive bumper closes the card and if the market vibes are positive for the Nicky Henderson newcomer, Kerensa, the mare might be worth following on her debut. Preference, however, is for experience and EASTER DANCER is expected to go well for Emma Lavelle. The filly shaped with promise on her Hereford debut over 2m1f last month and, in surrendering third on the line, she hinted that a drop in trip would be ideal. Point-to-point winner Toto Corde Meo is another to consider closely.
