Expert Analysis
A race elevated to Group 2 status in 2017, and won by Stradivarius and Kew Gardens in its first two years at that level, though the bare form on the day has been more consistent with a Group 3 or even listed. That was the case again here, a muddling affair resulting in an ordinary overall time and fast (106.7%) finishing speed, though the winner took it comfortably enough to think he was best in the race in any case and a smart prospect.
KEMARI (106 here, 92 previously) has done well in a short time, leaving his maiden form behind with a comfortable win in a race that tested speed, which he exhibited plenty of, tracking the pace, getting a good run through 2f out and quickening on, always in command despite drifting left, his rider able to put down his whip late on. Despite being by Dubawi, he looks like staying further still.
WORDSWORTH (104 here and previously) remains with potential, looking a real stayer here and not helped by a soft pace mid-race, niggled some way out and more clearly tapped for toe turning in but going on well at the death. A truer pace at this trip would help him, but two miles plus could see him take off.
STOWELL (102 here, 84 previously) shaped encouragingly in a tongue tie, out the back in a muddling affair before running on well out wide, almost the equal of the winner on sectionals. He looks like staying even further.
BENAUD (101 here, 95 previously) ran well despite things going against him a bit, in rear until staying on late without getting in a blow, like the third worth upgrading a couple of lengths.
LAW OF THE SEA (100 here, 95 previously) got the run of things most of the principals but can still be credited with some improvement, leading, steadying the pace mid-race, headed 2f out then hanging left and finding no extra late on.
TAIPAN (100 here, 103 previously) has not gone on as might have been hoped (often slowly away) but ran creditably despite taking a while to settle in first-time blinkers.
ARTURO TOSCANINI (99 here, 103 previously) ran creditably despite going a bit wide, seeming to underline that the Gallinule Stakes in which he finished second to Earlswood last time is not the strongest form.
DANCING KING (99 here, 96 previously) was up against it out of handicaps and ran pretty well, checked over 3f out but improving to have a chance of a place until one paced near the end.
RULING (96 here, 102 previously) ran respectably, improving to have a chance of a place until weakening late on, but looked a less than easy ride in the process.
PIED PIPER (94 here, 86 previously) seemed to improve on his handicap form but this may not prove the best of guides.
RECOVERY RUN (85 here, 106 previously) has still not found his form, finding little at this longer trip. Headgear may be an option.
