Expert Analysis
This represents smart form, just about, rather than better, the overall time 0.83s (about 5 lengths) slower than Fallen Angel’s win in the Matron half an hour earlier. The pace took a short while to pick up but was soon sound and the winner came home in 24.84s for a close-to-par 101.2% finishing speed. The runners raced off the rail in the back straight, with the exception of Expanded, and came stand side in the home one.
ALAKAZI (113 here, 109 previously) took a further step forward to exact revenge on a couple who had beaten him recently, showing smart form for the first time. He tracked the pace, mostly in 4th, was rousted over 2f out and led under pressure with 1f to go, kept right up to his work. There may be a bit more to come.
MUTASARREF (110 here, 106 previously) made late gains from towards the rear to run his best race of the campaign with cheekpieces on for the first time of late.
COMANCHE BRAVE (110 here and previously) ran creditably, as he has more often than not this year, coming from mid-field to have a chance over 1f out, one paced late on, this trip probably a maximum.
SKUKUZA (108 here, 110 previously) ran creditably, probably just a fraction below his best (had beaten Alakazi earlier in the season), quite free when tracking early and paying for it late.
LORD MASSUSUS (105 here and previously)
EXPANDED (104+ here, 114? previously) came in for support but failed to return to his best, not helped by a slow start and possibly by sticking to the inner, soon in 2nd/3rd but fading late on. His Dewhurst 2nd is not many starts back and this was a bit more encouraging than his other 2 appearances this year.
CHICAGO CRITIC (102 here, 108 previously) was a bit better than the result, making quite good headway to have a shout in the penultimate 1f then weakening.
SCORTHY CHAMP (100 here, 108 previously) should have fared better even judged on his slightly underwhelming form this year, in mid-field but struggling to hold his place some way out.
JOHAN (88 here, 110 previously) had an off day, finding little after leading.
