Verdict

GUN SMITH made a promising hurdling debut when finishing second to a progressive type (who has won since) at Sedgefield last month and, while he is likely to strip fitter this afternoon, he could take all the beating in this contest. Shanxi Girl finished a decent fourth on her first spin over the obstacles at Chepstow and rates the biggest threat, while Val Du Ciron is another worthy of consideration.

Verdict

Jim Old's charge, COUNTING HOUSE, made up for his earlier disappointment when finishing second at Ascot just three days ago and, with much less on his plate this afternoon, he could prove a cut above his rivals here. Armenian Boy ran a gallant race in defeat when finishing second at Fontwell on his latest outing and is likely to give a good account in this, while winning pointer, Mister Gloss, may prove best of the remainder.

Verdict

Arkle runner-up, FAIR ALONG, arrives here on the back of a couple of decent efforts on the level and should be fit and ready for the new jumping campaign. This looks the ideal pipe-opener for Philip Hobbs' gelding and, with the Champion Chase the likely long-term aim this season, he is expected to make light work of today's opposition. The consistent Royal Shakespeare finished third at Kempton on his latest outing and could give the selection most to think about, while Saintsaire looks best of the rest.

Verdict

Charlie Mann's MOON OVER MIAMI developed into a smart novice hurdler last season but was slightly disappointing when finishing fifth on his chasing bow at Kempton last month. Nevertheless, he is entitled to have learnt a great deal from that experience and it would be foolish to write him off just yet. Templer has shaped with promise on his two starts over the larger obstacles (winning once) and is likely to have his say in this, with Space Cowboy completing the frame.

Verdict

JIM EDWARDS showed very little on his four starts over hurdles last season but took full advantage of a useful mark when scoring on his chasing bow at Market Rasen in September. He stayed on relentlessly when scoring that day and, with this extended trip not a concern, he looks sure to mount a bold bid. Mister Apple's ended his losing streak when winning at Cheltenham last month and is unlikely to go down without a fight, while Kaldouas is another for the short-list.
