HOWLONGISAFOOT is the highest rated hurdler in the field and can successfully concede weight to his rivals on his seasonal debut for leading connections. The Newton Abbot bumper winner successfully bowed out there over hurdles in April, winning as odds of 4-7 suggested he would, and he brings some useful novice form to the table having finished second to subsequent Grade 2 winner Toubeera here in February. Ringa Bay is a four-time winner over fences and is interesting on his hurdling bow, while Filatore completes the shortlist.

Paul Nicholls' French recruit ALCALA is clearly held in high regard at home, having contest the Grade 2 Adonis on his UK debut, and the Vittel winner can make a successful return. The four-year-old is entitled to have strengthened up over the summer and any market support will inspire further confidence. Aso is a bumper winner in France and is interesting on his British debut for a shrewd operation, but Hurricane Vic represents the in-form Alan King and he's feared most on his hurdling bow.

There isn't much between Dunraven Storm, Puffin Billy and FAR WEST on hurdles ratings, all of whom make their chase debuts today, and what can only be described as a tentative vote is for the latter. Second to impressive winner Our Conor in the 2013 Triumph Hurdle, Paul Nicholls' charge didn't enjoy the smoothest of season's last term and he took a crashing fall when in the process of running a huge race in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury. His latest effort in the Coral Cup can be forgiven and he's likely to have been well schooled in preparation for his fencing bow. Oliver Sherwood's Puffin Billy is feared most returning from a setback that saw the 2013 Supreme Hurdle fifth miss the majority of last season, while Philip Hobbs' inmate is the sole course winner in the field and cannot be overlooked either.

Plenty in with chances in a wide-open handicap. Narrow preference is for FINANCIAL CLIMATE who, after bolting up in a small-field novice chase at Wetherby on his penultimate outing, was bitterly disappointing on his return to handicap company when last seen. It came to light afterwards that he had thrown a plate and he was clearly in discomfort from some way out, so that run is best forgotten. He has gone well fresh in the past and he likely has more to offer from this mark. Houston Dynimo went close to landing a Listed chase at Newton Abbot in August and he is entitled to plenty of respect. Perfect Candidate can go well on his return to chasing while Sixty Something merits serious consideration.

BAJAN BLU was narrowly denied at this venue over 2m1f last time and he can go one better now granted a stiffer test. He was momentarily outpaced before rallying that day, going down by half a length and pulling 12 lengths clear of a subsequent winner in third. This is far from straightforward, however, and Go West Young Man poses a serious threat on his reappearance. He has yet to get off the mark but has plenty of solid form to his name and a first success will surely come sooner rather than later. Worthy Award is open to improvement on just his third start for Jonjo O'Neill, while Jigsaw Financial arrives in winning form and can't be discounted.

Jewellery has been running consistently well and warrants plenty of respect off bottom-weight, but slight preference is for dual C&D scorer MIDNIGHT LIRA. The seven-year-old mare has been off for 189 days since her game C&D victory in April and, despite being hit with a subsequent 5lb rise, she remains well treated on her best form (won here off 2lb higher in December last year). Fellow last-time-out scorer Moorlands Jack represents the Jeremy Scott stable that won this event 12 months ago and he cannot be ruled out either.

This bumper has been won by some useful sorts in recent years and the betting market could prove a good guide as to what will unfold today with each of the 10 declared runners making their debut. Restraint is an interesting runner representing powerful Flat trainer Andrew Balding, particularly as the Park House handler saddled the winner of this event in 2011, while Miss Minx and Little Mix also merit shortlist inclusion. The vote, however, goes to KALIFOURCHON. The Martaline gelding is bred to have plenty of ability (half-brother to a couple of winners), cost 41,000 euros as a two-year-old and represents a David Pipe stable who boast a 44 per cent strike-rate in bumpers so far this season.
