Katahdin failed to fulfil the promise he showed in bumpers when hurdling last season, but clearly has a great deal of ability and can't be ignored on his reappearance. Clondaw Storm was sent off favourite on his debut for Nigel Twiston-Davies at Perth and is interesting reverting to timber in a first-time visor. However, a step up in trip could suit CYRUS KEEP, who made a pleasing reappearance over two miles at Hexham last month and he is one who could make his mark now joining the handicap ranks. Similar applies to Susan Corbett's Devour, who may also offer some value on his handicap bow.

APPLE ROCK appeared well ahead of his mark when making a successful switch to handicapping at Carlisle last week and he must have a great chance of following up quickly under a 7lb penalty. Apache Creek stayed on well to land a first victory at Perth last month and has to be respected off a 6lb higher mark, while Dog Of War enters calculations with the Dan Skelton team in red-hot form. Six One Nine finished last season with a career-best effort when second at Musselburgh in February and now joins the handicap ranks.

SHAN BLUE put in a faultless display when beating a useful cast to make the perfect start to his chasing career here earlier this month and has a great chance of making it two from two at the West Yorkshire track. The step up in trip is likely to cause few problems for the 3m point-to-point winner and he represents a stable in top form. Although backed to take this, the six-year-old does face a stern test in the shape of Hold The Note, who was last seen finishing third at the Cheltenham Festival. The form of that contest took a boost when Galvin (second) scored at Prestbury Park last week and the race has a history of being a good source of future winners. I K Brunel lost little in defeat when narrowly denied at Fontwell and the move up in distance could play to his strengths, while Snow Leopardess was a respectable third in a trappy contest at Bangor and is well worth her place in this line-up.

WILLIAM H BONNEY won off this mark at Huntingdon last season and shaped as though his recent C&D outing would bring him on nicely, while the handicapper has dropped him 2lb for that effort. Pop The Cork is open to further progression on his fifth outing over timber having had wind surgery over the summer, while the drop back in trip from his last hurdles run will benefit Marlborough Sounds, who warmed up for this by landing a 2m handicap on the Flat at Kempton.

Kim Bailey has started the campaign proper in fine fettle and TWO FOR GOLD makes a fair amount of appeal on his return to action. The seven-year-old suffered his only defeat over fences when coming up against Copperhead in the Reynoldstown at Ascot, the drop back in trip is unlikely to faze him, having won over 2m4f at Carlisle at the beginning of last season, and he remains open to further progression on his fifth outing over the larger obstacles. Huntsman Son returns from a lengthy spell off the track but he possesses some decent form and commands respect along with Happy Diva, who was last seen finishing second at the Cheltenham Festival.

Gordon Elliott sends over two unbeaten hurdlers in LONGCLAW and Duffle Coat but the former appears to hold the edge with regards to form having completed a hat-trick at Listowel last month. Soldier On Parade has to be respected despite giving weight to all of his rivals having got the better of prolific winner Hiconic at Market Rasen, while Midnights Legacy is entitled to have learnt plenty from his hurdling bow over C&D earlier in the month.

Equus Millar makes plenty of appeal on his Worcester demolition job in July last year, but the 485-day absence is a concern and perhaps SOME REIGN, with the benefit of a recent run to his name, is the safer bet. He could hardly have been more impressive when successfully dropping to a similar trip at Hexham latest and connections have found their gelding another very winnable opening. Cracking Find is another to note.

THIRD TIME LUCKI sets a good standard as last season's Champion Bumper fourth, and he has race-fitness on his side after opening his hurdles account on reappearance at Uttoxeter a fortnight ago. The same cannot be said of Buzz De Turcoing and Heart Of A Lion, his main rivals who both have lengthy a absence to overcome, and Dan Skelton's charge can successfully concede weight to these before moving up in class.
