Ben Brookhouse has settled in well to his Newmarket base, where he is very much a dual-purpose handler, and in his second season has the enviable position of having a live Cheltenham Festival contender.
Brechin Castle could have been sent straight over hurdles but father Bob was instrumental in making the decision to keep the winner of his only Irish point-to-point in the bumper division, and the dividends have already been paid.
The Shantou gelding swept to a 14-length success from Vision De Maine in a bumper at Sedgefield in October and there was more to come in a Listed contest at Cheltenham in November, when he beat the Paul Nicholls-trained Fire Flyer by two and a quarter lengths.
The hat-trick proved a bridge too far when he failed to concede 11lb to the Dan Skelton-trained mare Let It Rain, but with a fair mix of ability and experience he certainly deserves his place in the Champion Bumper next month.
Ben said: “The plan is to go to Cheltenham, and if that doesn’t work then he might go to Aintree instead. We would dearly like him to go to Cheltenham though, and the plan after would be to go to Punchestown as well.
“Things have been a little quiet, but we will be having a busy time soon and are looking forward to the year ahead.”
Ben kindly talked to Tony Elves of attheraces.com about Brechin Castle and several other interesting inmates at Savile House Stables.
