Irish born and bred, Gavin Hernon, who spent two years as a pupil assistant with Andre Fabre and another season with Nicolas Clement, is one of France’s up and coming trainers.
Only in his fifth season, he has already saddled a Group winner and certainly grabbed everyone’s attention when the filly Flighty Lady finished third in the 2019 renewal of the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac.
He could have settled anywhere in the world, but explains: “I have worked with Jim Bolger, then spent time in France and then moved to America to work with Graham Motion. It was there that I was contacted by an owner, whom I met previously in France and who was keen to get into French racing. He got me out of America earlier than I had intended but he wanted to set up a syndicate with seven horses, so it was an ideal opportunity.”
Hernon enjoyed a fabulous first season when he saddled four winners from seven runners and he now trains 45 horses from his yard in Chantilly. Here, Gavin gives Liz Price of attheraces.com the lowdown on his hopes for the 2022 season.
