Johnny Murtagh has long been established as one of the most recognisable faces on the international racing scene.
Murtagh initially came to prominence as a world-class jockey. Associated with John Oxx and Aidan O’Brien amongst others over the years, he won the majority of major Group 1 races in Europe and many others around the world, with some of his most memorable partners including Sinndar, High Chaparral, Choisir and Yeats.
Johnny announced his retirement from the jockey ranks in early-2014 in order to concentrate on his new career as a trainer which had started the previous year and had already yielded three individual Group-race victories.
Murtagh enjoyed his first Group 1 win when Champers Elysees took the Matron Stakes on Irish Champions Weekend in 2020 and is now firmly established as of the top trainers in Ireland.
The Kildare Town trainer took time out from his busy schedule to talk through his team of horses with Kevin Blake of attheraces.com.
