Mathieu Pitart, a former jockey, set up training in November 2017 at Chazey-en-Ain, which lies to the east of Lyon. Only five months later, he won his first Grade 1 at Auteuil when Wildriver lifted the Prix Alain du Breil, the four-year-old Champion Hurdle.
Interestingly, Wildriver made his debut at Cagnes-sur-Mer and while his trainer knows that Grade 1 winners are hard to come by, he is looking forward to another successful winter campaign at the Côte d’Azur.
“I have been going to Cagnes for the best part of 20 years,” he says. “First as a jockey and now as a trainer. I absolutely love it. I came down here with only two horses in 2017 and this year, we are taking 25 of them.”
Mathieur Pitart is saddling no less than 11 runners on Friday, the first day of the meeting and here he tells Liz Price of attheraces.com about this season’s prospects.
