Nihal accounted for a subsequent winner at York but has risen a significant 8lb and, in GLOBAL GENIUS, faces a colt who could ultimately prove better than handicap class. Barry Hills' Chesham runner-up was workmanlike rather than spectacular when landing his maiden at Chester but the step-up from 7f will see him in a better light. Charlie Tokyo made the frame in one of the better nurseries seen this season at Newmarket and is preferred to stable mate Genre, while Urban Tiger is one to watch on his handicap debut.

Fresh from saddling Goodricke to take Haydock's showpiece at the weekend, David Loder relies upon Stetchworth Prince to land another valuable sprint prize, although the son of Cadeaux Genereux faces his stiffest task to date. Fire Up The Band has enjoyed his finest season yet, with his Goodwood Group 3 success particularly pleasing. He was put in his place in the Nunthorpe, though, and will struggle to make up the ground on third-placed MAJESTIC MISSILE who ran a cracker at York and is finally living up to his undoubted potential.

With Confidential Lady out of the reckoning, her Sweet Solera conqueror Nasheej should face a more straightforward task but, like Rising Cross and Spinning Queen, she is relatively exposed now and is reluctantly passed over in favour of the twice-raced PURE ILLUSION. John Gosden's filly built on an encouraging debut to beat last week's Newmarket winner Eilean Ban with contemptuous ease at HQ and this looks well within her compass.

Iffraaj hasn't been seen since his July Cup failure and, while he is suited by today's extra furlong, he still has to prove himself outside of handicap company. Arakan showed his appreciation for the drop to Listed level by disposing of Quito at the Ebor meeting but had previously been found wanting behind Court Masterpiece at Goodwood. The latter is sure to be on the premises again but the vote goes to SLEEPING INDIAN whose sole defeat came in the Sussex Stakes and victory here could earn him another crack at the elite.

Richard Quinn earned many plaudits for cajoling the enigmatic Millenary to an impressive Lonsdale Cup victory but the 2000 St Leger hero isn't guaranteed to repeat that and York runner-up DISTINCTION is taken to gain his revenge. His Ascot Gold Cup second, combined with his Goodwood Cup triumph, stamps him as the best stayer in Britain and he can land today's prize on the way to another tilt at the Melbourne Cup. Cover Up was no match for the front two on the Knavesmire, so Ebor hero Sergeant Cecil could be the one for the tricast.

There are plenty of imponderables surrounding FAVOURABLE TERMS, notably a 14-month absence and a distance short of her best, but it is interesting that the Group 1 winner is kept in training as a 5yo and her class should carry her home. Nufoos is the only opponent within a stone of the selection on official ratings and comes here fresh from a break following an easy Listed victory. She would be the one to take advantage should the selection have an off day with, perhaps, last year's winner Attune best of the rest.

The ultra-consistent H Harrison deserves a change of luck after a string of second-placings, although the handicapper is taking no chances. Pintle won as she liked against her own sex at Yarmouth but a 6lb penalty in open company makes life tougher. Conjuror will surely be winning before too long if last week's Redcar second is anything to go by but MACHINIST caught the eye when storming into fifth over an inadequate 6f at Newmarket, despite suffering interference, and looks primed for a return to the winner's enclosure.
