Not exactly a vintage opening to the New Year, but Precious Ground has run well in defeat recently, particularly when third at this track in November. He looked to struggle over a similar trip at Chepstow, though, and perhaps it is worth siding with BUCKBORU, who might have trailed Precious Ground two starts back, but meets that rival on more favourable terms now and could have more to offer in first-time cheekpieces. The booking of Nick Schofield for Mount Prospex catches the eye and perhaps Kudu Shine can make a greater impact on his first start in a 0-100 handicap.

Emerging Talent will clearly prove tough to beat if bouncing back to his best now a tongue-tie is fitted, but his forecast price looks prohibitively short with the form of Paul Nicholls' yard under increased scrutiny. A chance is taken on EBADANI, who was a useful Flat horse for Mick Halford (rated 85) and shaped with plenty of promise on his hurdling bow at Huntingdon. The newcomer Smart Thinking could be a joker in the pack and should be monitored in the betting, along with De Bene Esse, who sports a hood after failing to live up to market expectations at Carlisle.

Railway Storm often runs well but finds a few too good for him, an outcome that is likely to be repeated again today. BUCKHORN TOM was a winner over C&D a year ago from just 2lb lower in the ratings and his second at Plumpton last time suggested that he was on his way back to form. A return to this course, where he has either won or been placed in six of his 10 starts, can see him get back to winning ways. The yard of Venetia Williams has been in great form of late, making her pair very interesting, especially Kings River.

VIEUX LILLE could hardly have been more impressive when winning a similar event over a slightly shorter trip here last month. He appears to be on the upgrade and the 7lb penalty is highly unlikely to stop him from completing a hat-trick of wins. Easy Street was third in a very competitive bumper at Leopardstown a year ago (on his sole start for Willie Mullins) and on that evidence he looks to be the main danger to the selection. Bindon Mill was arguably a bit disappointing on his hurdles debut but that was a fairly strong event and more can expected today.

WINNING SPARK conceded weight to his two conquerors when third in a stronger 0-125 handicap at Taunton and might have done even better if his rider hadn't lost his irons. He is just 1lb higher here and might be worth another chance. Floresco is feared most after a promising reappearance run at Taunton, but neither Braavos or Auckland De Re should be underestimated in handicap company for leading connections. Darwins Theory could be a player if his confidence is buoyed after winning for the first time since 2012 and he completes the shortlist.

Harry Fry enjoyed a winner at this corresponding meeting 12 months ago and should taste success again courtesy of ACTIVIAL. By far and away the best of these on hurdles form (third in a Betfair Hurdle and Coral Cup), the five-year-old finished second on his chase bow in Grade 2 company at Newbury and if he's come forward from that spin, and brushed up slightly in the jumping department, he should take the world of beating. Oscar Sunset finished 10 lengths behind subsequent Grade 1 winner Tea For Two on his chasing debut here last month and is the main danger, but the likes of Union Saint and Fear Glic will need to step up.

GAYEBURY is a winner without a penalty in the finale and is expected to put an unfortunate Ffos Las disqualification behind him. Tom Symonds' charge finished first past the post at the Welsh venue but had edged right into Prime Venture in the closing stages and was subsequently placed second following a stewards inquiry. They pulled some 24 lengths clear of the third horse, so the form looks strong and he can make amends at the chief expense of Bacchanel and El Tiburon.
