BEAUTY PAGEANT showed admirable battling qualities when scoring at Bath last month as she had been pestered for the lead. Ed McMahon's charge probably rates a little better than her 6lb rise as a consequence and is one to keep onside at present. With C&D winning form to his name, Oldjoesaid looks the main danger as he remains well treated on the pick of his form and advertised his well-being when runner-up at Thirsk last time. The likely strong pace will also assist Gottcher, who was second to Apace over C&D earlier in the season.

It is interesting that Richard Fahey's stable jockey Paul Hanagan has opted to ride Paul Green's Legal Eagle but while this decision must be taken seriously, THE NIFTY FOX gets the nod. Good ground appears to be the key to his horse and another 1lb down in the ratings, the son of Foxbound is back to what looks a winnable mark. Restless Bay bounced back to something like his best at Bath in August and is worthy of consideration along with Beat The Bell.

A tough look maiden to solve but VAN DER ART is getting a handy sex allowance from a few of these and can benefit from having had three starts already. The Dutch Art filly seemingly has it all to do against the boys but was again seen giving a good account of herself at Yarmouth last time behind the useful Michael Bell newcomer Alaskan Bullet. Ballesteros is the obvious danger to the selection having also made a pleasing start to his career while the Charlie Hills-trained newcomer Lawn Jamil could be the subject of market support.

C&D winner Klynch runs 2lb well in at the weights and appears back down to a winnable mark for handler Ruth Carr. IRON RANGE has obviously had his problems having been off the track for almost a year but his debut success at Ayr was emphatic and if ready to roll, will take all the beating for Ed McMahon and John Fretwell. The son of Clodovil won't mind getting his toe in if ground conditions ease but keep a watchful eye on Invincible Force who carries a 6lb penalty.

With Clive Cox's horse having hit top form, it might be worth siding with GANAS on his handicap bow. The Oasis Dream colt more than appreciated the switch to the turf at Doncaster when shedding his maiden tag and the way in which he lengthened that day suggested he could be some way ahead of the handicapper off a mark of 85. Hotham continues to hold his form well and the booking of Paul Hanagan is interesting but Jarrow looks the main threat for sprint-king Dandy Nicholls.

One Scoop Or Two has winning form at this venue over 1m and continues to give a good account of himself, most notably at Chester last time out in similar company. The Reg Hollinshead charge must be taken seriously but slight preference is for REDVERS who is likely to relish this step up in trip. The Ralph Beckett representative looked slightly out of his depth over the minimum distance at Goodwood in July but with winning form over 6f, this looks an ideal chance for the three-year-old while Free For All makes most appeal elsewhere.

Staying power is the name of the game over this 1m 6f trip and while a positive market move for Paul Hanagan's mount, Harvey's Hope, could be worth following, CARTER gets the nod. The Ian Williams dual purpose individual has racked up a summer double at Stratford in novice hurdler company over the extended 2m and returns to the Flat scene still on a decent mark. Of the others, Wild Desert has failed to get his head in front this term but form suggests he can pose a serious threat.

17:10 Haydock (Class 3) (3YO plus)

Take It To The Max has been handed a 3lb rise in the ratings for his success at Goodwood last time and the step up in trip can ensure the gelding remains competitive. Taqleed has failed to recapture his three-year-old form and, for that reason, it might be worth siding with ON HER WAY. Her form over this C&D in July looks solid enough and her 1lb rise in the ratings doesn't look set to stop the Luca Cumani-trained filly who will have improved for that season reappearance.
