It is not the biggest surprise to see HELMSDALE step up in trip considering her breeding and the fact that she has looked rather one-paced over 7f of late. The daughter of Nathaniel has contested three stronger heats than this to date and she has made the frame on two of those occasions. Mary Anne Evans improved for her debut experience when only beaten four lengths a Nottingham last time. Clearly more was expected from Al Nafoorah when she was sent off at 7-2 on debut in May. The filly may have finished last of seven on that occasion but the form has worked out well, with the winner taking a Group 3 at Goodwood on Saturday.

This looks to be a maiden full of promising sorts for the future and, while the likes of Foxcatcher and Moonlit Show set a fair standard, this could go the way of a newcomer. HARBA is the latest debutant from the first crop of the great Frankel and this 300,000gns purchase is out of a winning two-year-old, who finished second in a Group 3 a year later in her career. Grey Thou Art is a half-sister to Foundation, who won the Royal Lodge last season, and Spring Eternal is from a very successful Juddmonte family. Eartha Kitt is the first foal out of Queen Mary winner Ceiling Kitty and it would be no surprise to see the daughter of Pivotal go very well on debut.

In a very competitive heat, a chance can be taken with COSMIC CHATTER, who finds himself just 6lb above his last winning mark and he has made the frame in both starts since that victory. Two starts ago he was only beaten a nose and a neck when third at Redcar and both the winner and second from that contest have won since. Lexi's Hero was a place behind the selection on that occasion and he merits each-way consideration, along with Gambit and Van Gerwen. Tarboosh is by some way the least exposed of these and he is surely better than what he showed at Yarmouth last time. Others to note are Edward Lewis and Explain.

Another competitive sprint handicap, in which DESERT ACE could go very well at a decent price. This is the first time in his career that the five-year-old has raced from a mark below 80 and there has been promise in some of his most recent starts. It also has to be noted that Iain Jardine's horses are flying at the moment. Pearl Acclaim has been unfortunate not to win a race so far this season and another good run can be expected from this son of Acclamation today. The likes of Invincible Ridge, Ladweb and Orient Class all arrive here in good form and they must feature on the shortlist, while Apricot Sky is another to merit respect.

Nayel appears to be the pick of the older horses but even he looks to be vulnerable to some progressive and unexposed three-year-olds. EL VIP hails from a high-class family, with seven of his half-siblings picking up black type in their careers. The son of Pivotal looked capable of mixing it at that level when making a winning debut in a decent contest at Doncaster in July and based upon that evidence, as well as his breeding, an opening mark of 90 may underestimate his ability. Muzdawaj is clearly going in the right direction and a 5lb rise for his latest victory at Newbury looks to be fair, while Great Order is another who looks sure to improve with more experience.

It is noteworthy that Paul Hanagan rides at Haydock rather than Ascot where he could have had other rides for Hamdan Al Maktoum and the progressive ALNASHAMA must rate as one of his best chances chasing a four-timer. The four-year-old remains on the upgrade and a 6lb rise might not be enough to prevent another victory for Charlie Hills' four-year-old. Free Code has looked well handicapped for some time now and the booking of Frankie Dettori suggests that a bold bid is anticipated, while He's No Saint has some ground to make up on the selection but cannot be fully ignored with his yard in such good form this week.

Andrew Balding's VANISHING POINT got off the mark in comfortable fashion at Carlisle last time out and an opening handicap mark of 80 looks more than fair for the three-year-old. He has a tongue-tie on for the first time and could make a winning start to handicap life under promising 3lb claimer Edward Greatrex. Dew Pond is a consistent type who has a good turn of foot and he can probably be forgiven a disappointing run at York last month, while Michael's Mount remains open to further improvement but his yard haven't been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks.
