A fascinating contest with HAVANA GOLD taken to return to winning brackets after a desperately unlucky defeat (saddle slipped when clear) in Listed company at Deauville. He had previously looked a juvenile of real promise when scoring at Newmarket and Ascot and should handle the step up to a mile. Al Waab also tackles the trip for the first time and rates a strong danger after maintaining his unbeaten record in some style when easily accounting for Ask Dad at Newmarket last time. Azrur looked very promising too on his Doncaster debut and is not ruled out in an intriguing affair.

Always a competitive sprint with Zero Money attempting to land back-to-back successes. However, he's 5lb higher than last year and hasn't sparkled the last twice so FACE THE PROBLEM is preferred. He arrives a fresh horse after just two runs this season and confirmed his well-being with a solid runner-up effort in a decent Sandown handicap sprint a week ago. He didn't receive a clear passage that day and can make amends if the cards fall right. The irrepressible Tax Free continues to strut his stuff at the age of ten with impressive relish and must be shortlisted.

Really interesting fare with Chil The Kite and Boom And Bust fully deserving of this move into Listed class in search of black type. The upgraded pair are preferred in that order as Hughie Morrison's colt has done nothing but improve this term and was always controlling a decent Ascot handicap last time. However, THISTLE BIRD is now a very assured Listed/Group performer and, having been only narrowly inched out by Premier Loco in Goodwood's Celebration Mile recently, she sets a strong standard. Gabrial has been aimed high this summer and should enjoy reverting to Listed level. He completes the shortlist.

Another chance - and a good one too - for Bated Breath to finally land that elusive Group 1 under what appears to be optimum conditions of 6f on quick ground. Sure to run his race, the Charlton inmate must go close on the best of his form but ORTENSIA has looked so impressive the last twice, in landing the Group 3 King George Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York, that Paul Messara's wonderful mare is taken to complete the Group hat-trick with the extra furlong here expected to suit admirably. Strong Suit just failed to land the Hungerford Stakes last time and has his conditions now dropped back to this sprint trip. He definitely enters calculations, while Wizz Kid, Hitchens, Hawkeyethenoo and the progressive Gordon Lord Byron are all respected in a good-quality renewal.

Mark Johnston has won three of the last nine runnings of this competitive handicap and fires a triple salvo with Sir Graham Wade preferred. He showed fine form before finishing tailed off in the Melrose Handicap at York but stable's inmates have the knack of rediscovering form after a modest performance and Kieren Fallon is booked. Address Unknown, Getabuzz and Tropical beat are respected candidates in an open heat but a chance is taken with ITLAAQ. A course winner, the gelding was noted making eye-catching late progress when beaten just under four lengths in fifth behind Olympiad in a hot handicap at the Ebor meeting and rates a value-for-money each-way option.

Plenty with solid chances but KAMCHATKA created a pleasing impression when striding away to land a Pontefract maiden last month on similar ground and looks feasibly treated for this move into handicap company. He looks the sort to progress again and is preferred to Derwent. The latter was rather disappointing on soft ground last time but displayed by far the best form of his three-race career when scooting up on good to firm at Newbury. A repeat of that effort puts him in here with strong claims. Hat-trick seeking Capo Rosso and the nicely-handicapped Grey Street are also noteworthy.

Most arrive in good heart and a competitive staying handicap should ensue. EX ORIENTE has taken time to get his head in front this term despite solid handicap efforts but looked an improved performer when landing a 1m4f Newmarket handicap in decisive fashion last time on the forecast conditions and further improvement over this extra 2f looks likely. Between Us is a typical late-maturing Prescott improver expected to appreciate the step up in trip as he seeks the hat-trick. Coutesy Call is better than his latest effort but Lady Kashaan is preferred for the shortlist, while Cape Safari appears best on Fibresand.
