The Venetia Williams yard is most certainly off the cold list having enjoyed a great start to the new year and HOHLETHELONELY can do the business in the opener despite the burden of top weight under a 7lb penalty. The eight-year-old is dropped back in class for this handicap event but can take advantage of the step up in trip under the useful 6lb-claimer Harry Challoner. Clever Dick and Goat Castle have also threatened a win in recent times and must be considered.

Sambelucky has threatened in this sphere off a similar mark but while he is taken to go close, the seven-year-old is yet to win over the larger obstacles and, with that in mind, ROYAUME BLEU gets the vote. The gelded son of Kapgarde struggled when stepped up in trip at Fontwell latest but is expected to run back to his best now dropped back to the extended 2m4f. Elsewhere, Free Speech is a horse on an upward curve this term and warrants the utmost respect.

The subsequent Grade 2-winning Spirit Son landed this novice hurdle 12 months ago and it is very hard to look past stablemate ERICHT this time around. The Nicky Henderson charge wasn't disgraced when sixth in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival last year and has since shaped with promise over timber behind several of the Supreme Novices' Hurdle-fancies, Steps To Freedom, Prospect Wells and Colour Squadron. Cousin Khee and Hollow Heartbeat can battle it out for minor honours.

Another novices' event which both Nicky Henderson and Barry Geraghty landed 12 months ago and the 129-rated PROBLEMA TIC looks likely to make it back-to-back victories for the Lambourn-based handler. The six-year-old coped well when tacking the larger obstacles for the first time at Fontwell on Boxing Day and, while forced to carry a penalty for that success, a similar level of performance should suffice. Of the others, Kauto Relko and Canni Thinkaar might be forced to settle for supporting roles.

Veteran-chaser KINKEEL displayed signs of a revival at this track at the beginning of the month following his fifth in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid the time before and, off an unchanged mark, the Tony Carroll-trained charge is expected to take advantage of his position at the foot of the weights. Phoenix Des Mottes has threatened in recent times and looks weighted to go close, while Star Galaxy must not be overlooked with Peter Hatton talking off 7lb in the plate.

While the unexposed filly Galloping Queen looks feasibly treated at the weights on her handicap debut in this sphere, MANGONEL is due to go up 9lb in the ratings and is taken to continue on an upward curve. Tom Scudamore has played a huge part in his revival this term having twice ridden him to victory and, if in a similar mood to that at Folkestone latest, the Jim Best charge is expected to score again. Pampelonne rates best of the rest.

Brigadier Miller lost nothing in defeat at Taunton on debut when running into the promising Trespasser and the gelded son of Act One is expected to have improved for the outing. Slight preference, however, is for SPECIAL MATE. The Tim Vaughan charge is forced to carry a penalty for landing a Ffos Las bumper in February last year but if ready to roll this afternoon, he can maintain his unbeaten record. Little Chip completes the shortlist.
