Samson Des Galas is capable of running a big race at this level, while Southern Bazaar wasn't far away in a similar event at Catterick nearly four weeks ago. Rain would help Before The Mast whose recent third was achieved on heavy ground at Uttoxeter, but preference is for PROTOCOL who has run some good races on this track and is ready to strike.
Parisienne Gale has been in excellent form over both fences and hurdles this season, so must be a danger, as must progressive hurdler Bishop's Bridge if he is now ready for a return to fences, but DETONATEUR could be the one to beat. He was no match for the principals in a Ludlow handicap earlier this month, but that form looks good in this company.
Zeloso has been outclassing the opposition in selling events, but has been raised 9lb as a result and is clearly facing a tougher task from 1lb out of the handicap. He could be capable of defying these terms, but preference is for KARATHAENA who has recorded two of her three career victories at this track and proved she was in good heart when third at Doncaster earlier this month. Salhood is now 6lb below the mark off which he won in better company a couple of seasons ago, so could bounce back to form.
If he handles the forecast good ground, as all his victories have been achieved with some give underfoot, Supreme Breeze is a big danger to all after getting the better of Capybara (3rd) in Hexham's Northumberland National, but preference here is for HEIDI III who was having only his second outing since returning from a lengthy absence when second over this C&D last month.
BLACKERGREEN makes his chasing debut in this modest handicap. He showed promise over hurdles last term, and he can open his account on his seasonal bow. Kaikovra is on a long losing streak, but there was some encouragement in his recent fourth behind Walcot Lad at Fontwell. Jonny's Kick has the ability to perform well in this grade.
Twice a runner-up in bumpers, OSCATELLO found the Irish import Galteemountain Boy just too strong on his hurdling debut. The rest were well beaten on that occasion and he is taken to open his account today. Bumper winner Caulkleys Bank makes his hurdling bow, and looks one for the short-list despite over a year off the track. Another bumper winner Schumann was highly tried last time and should do better in this lower grade.
Dual bumper winner BLUE BUSTER made a pleasing start to his hurdling career when third behind a fair sort at Kelso three weeks ago. Highly regarded, he will know more this time and is taken to open his account over timber this afternoon. Di's Dilemma finished second to Smart Boy Prince in a handicap over C&D last time, and should go close. Fuel Cell disappointed last time after a promising hurdling debut, but cannot be written off just yet.
