FAIR FLUTTER is the only previous winner going to post for this nursery but, quite unusually, is yet to finish first past the post. Richard Fahey's charge was awarded a similar event at Beverley in the stewards' room two starts ago, following Ocean Storm's inability to stay straight inside the final furlong, but he confirmed that to be no fluke when posting yet another encouraging display at Ripon on Saturday and he remains off a mark which looks exploitable. Haayil improved on his handicap debut at Kempton latest and is open to further progression going up to 1m2f for the first time, while The Wallace Line can also make the frame.

MERLETTA is likely to be all the rage in this maiden. Not only will her supporters be pleased to see Ryan Moore keep the ride, they will be further encouraged by the manner in which Coral Mist landed a Group 3 at Ayr's Gold Cup meeting recently, the horse she played second fiddle to in a Haydock maiden last time. The daughter of Raven's Pass sets a very high standard boasting a rating of 97 and should take all of the beating. Amahoro should be wiser for her Pontefract introduction, while Monarch Maid rates best of the rest.

AMBITIOUS ICARUS won this corresponding handicap 12 months ago and returns in search of a hat-trick. Although he exploited a much lower mark (62) last year, he arrives in the form of his career and is tough to oppose. The son of Striking Ambition carries a 6lb penalty for his Ripon success off a mark of 68 on Saturday and another bold performance looks assured with conditions sure to be to his liking. Perfect Pasture arrives on a hat-trick of his own following wins at Hamilton and Carlisle and, along with Eland Ally, cannot be overlooked.

Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation usually go particularly well at this time of year, especially with their maiden runners, so both Chortle, sixth at Leicester on debut, and Shallow Lake must come into the reckoning. REGARDEZ is well worth another look, though. She has experience on her side and, despite having disappointing favourite backers last time out, she simply bumped into a better filly at Chepstow and wasn't disgraced in collecting a silver medal. Expected to build on that outing, she can score at the main expense of Adore.

Vermont boasts obvious claims having earned a rating of 85 after three starts this year, but he seemingly had plenty going for him when unable to justify cramped odds at Pontefract last time out. Perhaps the drop to 1m will play to his strengths, but he's opposed with MUSADDAS. Saeed Bin Suroor's October strike-rates in the last four seasons are 33% (2009), 25% (2010), 16% (2011) and 27% (2012) and it would come as no surprise to see his Lingfield fourth show a good level of improvement for his debut experience. Aomen Rock rates best of the rest.

Fraserburgh runs from 1lb out of the handicap but his recent Carlisle second brings him right into the reckoning under a low weight. SAIGON CITY gets the verdict, though, up a mere 3lb for landing a Yarmouth handicap in July. He's open to stacks of improvement and, by Mount Nelson, his stamina can come to the fore if the early pace is generous. Loved One arrives in good heart for the in-form James Fanshawe operation, while the unexposed Defiant Spirit is also worthy of shortlist inclusion.

ABSENT AMY represents a model of consistency and can continue on an upward curve shouldering a 6lb penalty for her latest Carlisle success. She comfortably beat Mark Johnston's Fraserburgh on that occasion and he can boost that form in the previous race on this card. Hayley Moore is yet to ride the Redback filly in competitive action but she's a more than capable pilot and her mount must be taken seriously in the finale. Thereabouts has most certainly lived up to his name in recent times and is also considered along, with Having A Ball.
