MAGNUS MAXIMUS shaped with promise over 7f on debut at Newbury, keeping on well for third and hinting that he'd improve for the step up to 1m in time. Richard Hannon's colt, a 190,000gns yearling, is out of a 1m2f all-weather winner, strengthening the belief that there may be better to come over this longer distance. 110,000 guinea purchase Belrog is worth a market check on debut along with fellow newcomer Orion's Bow, who is a brother to four winners including Heaven Sent.

HANDS UP shaped with promise on his debut over 7f at Newmarket, staying on well for fourth despite meeting with trouble. A half-brother to a French 1m2f winner, he's bred to improve over this longer trip and could put the experience gained on debut to good use today. Snow Sky has demonstrated reasonable ability in two previous maiden outings and is likely to be on the premises, while support for High Master, who looks the pick of Richard Hannon's trio, would also be notable.

Rosso Corsa sets the standard based on his Vintage Stakes fourth at Goodwood, when beaten little over four lengths in Group 2 company at the Glorious meeting. He has, however, endured a busy year, and on the basis of him having a potential freshness angle over the first-named, PIPING ROCK gets the verdict. A half-brother to four winners, Richard Hannon's Dubawi colt gets the verdict after making a winning debut over 6f at Ascot. Ffos Las winner Hartnell drops back from 1m but looks best of the rest.

With Well Painted ruled out, LORD OFTHE SHADOWS gets the nod because he is generally consistent and should prove too strong for these rivals. Blinkered three-year-old Hipster is most likely to chase him home, with Breaking The Bank best of the rest.

OPEN WATER hasn't been seen since disappointing on his Windsor reappearance back in May but he was heavily backed prior to that outing and his performances as a three-year-old suggested he could make up into a very smart performer in time. He looks worth another chance. Mister Impatience returned to form with a half-length defeat at Goodwood last time and could go close, especially if there is some cut in the ground. Progressive handicapper Nabucco returns from a 64-day break and is also worth a market check.

FIGURE OF SPEECH has kept good company this term and suffered a short-head defeat in the Sirenia Stakes last month before losing little in defeat when fourth in the Mill Reef Stakes back on turf, beaten by little over a length by Supplicant. Now lowered into this weaker grade and fitted with a first-time visor, Charlie Appleby's representative rates the one to beat. Justice Day (second) and Expert (third) are closely matched on their recent Doncaster run and both have place possibilities.

Accession has been raised 2lb for finishing third in a competitive 0-90 contest over 7f at Goodwood and is interesting now eased in grade and dropped in trip. Preference, however, is for DESERT COMMAND, who was denied by just a short-head over this trip at Epsom last time and looks open to further improvement despite a subsequent 2lb rise. Fellow three-year-old Tight Fit drops back from 7f but usually travels with enough menace to suggest it is unlikely to be an issue.

CHAPTER FIVE led entering the final furlong before being headed late on by Eshtyaaq over 2m1f at Bath last time and is a potential improver now dropping back to this shorter trip, despite a recent 3lb rise. The selection reopposes the winner on identical terms but given David Evans' charge needed every yard of the trip to score last time, he's not certain to confirm those placings over 1m6f here. 125-rated hurdler Highway Code could go well off 70 in this sphere and also commands a market check.
