A chance is taken on ATTRITION in what looks an open curtain-raiser. The majority of his performances so far this year have been most encouraging and he showed that he handles the polytrack surface when narrowly beaten here in February. Fear Nothing outran his odds of 16-1 at Catterick last time and should give another good account while C&D winner Canadian Danehill is ridiculously well handicapped on best form.

Accumulate ran out a comfortable winner over C&D latest and warrants the utmost respect in his bid to follow up despite running from 1lb out of the handicap, but PROUD TIMES gets the vote. A couple of placed efforts over hurdles this year suggests that he's as well as ever and proven course form is also a big plus. Never Can Tell ended last season with a cosy win at the track and must enter calculations on her return.

DESPERATE DAN looks ready to notch up his twentieth career win. Things didn't go right for him here eight days ago, but that first run since October will have blown any cobwebs away and there should be plenty of pace through Orpenindeed this evening to help to Jamie Spencer successful deliver with hold-up tactics. Bonnie Prince Blue looks an obvious danger on the back of his comfortable Southwell win, while Cavitie has each-way claims.

ONLYFOALSANDHORSES showed a likeable attitude when striking on her handicap debut over C&D last month and, entitled to strip fitter for that first run since August, she will be fancied to defy a 4lb rise. Misere has edged closer to the target in each of her three maidens and has to be respected now entering handicap company, while Empress Charlotte was sent off at short odds to land a couple of nurseries towards the back-end of last year and cannot be overlooked on her seasonal reappearance.

Blackstone Vegas pulled out all to stops to score over an extended 1m4f at the track recently and seems sure to go close tonight if handling the extra half-mile, but preference is for Bill Turner's SIX OF CLUBS. Barring a lacklustre display at Lingfield in February, he has been in fine form this year and a ready success over C&D last month suggests that he likes it here. Another in-form player, Maydream, makes up the shortlist.

SACRED SHIELD is the only runner on the card for a Henry Cecil team that have enjoyed plenty of success at this track down the years and she looks the one to beat. She showed plenty of encouraging signs when fifth on her racecourse debut over an extended 7f at Warwick in September (third and sixth have won since) and this longer distance should help. Dark Spirit is also looking to build on a pleasing introduction, while Ash Cloud makes plenty of appeal first time out having cost 40,000 guineas.

Both the Mark Johnston-trained runners look to have strong claims and BARNUM edges the vote. He has improved in each of his three starts in maiden company and is best off at the weights tonight. His stablemate Colebrooke is hoping to make it tenth time lucky but may have to settle for a place once again, while Bertie Blu Boy would have every chance if recapturing the sort of form that saw him score comfortably over an extended 1m here at the start of the month. Connections of all five runners will be hopeful though.
