Those with experience haven't shown much, while Richard Fahey's duo, of which apparent second-string Springleaf appeals most on pedigree, haven't fared too well with the draw. A market move for Tom Dascombe's Pyman's Theory would have to be taken seriously but the vote goes to LYRICIST, who represents a Kevin Ryan stable that has started the season brightly and saddled three juvenile winners from just seven runners at this track last year.

James Given has his string in excellent shape at present and although SZABO'S DESTINY has had eight previous unsuccessful attempts to get off the mark, he shaped well in third at Wolverhampton last week and looks worth another chance off the same mark on only his second career start on turf. Prince Freddie will be popular under the champion jockey having gone close at Beverley on his reappearance but he looked to be feeling the ground that day and perhaps Bestwecan will give the selection most to worry about.

HOOF IT won four times last year, culminating in a last-gasp defeat of Noble Storm over 5f at Doncaster in October. Given the fact the runner-up that day has since won twice, big things can be expected of Mick Easterby's four-year-old this term. If he fails to shine or doesn't quite return at the peak of his powers, Paul Midgley could hold the key. He saddles Haajes and Internationaldebut, with the latter very much feared from his good draw on the back of a recent near-miss at Doncaster. Crown Choice is a fascinating contender dropping to a sprint trip for the first time in his career but he might be best watched for the time being.

DESCARO accounted for Terenzium (4th), I Got Music (7th), Jackson (8th), Ultimate Quest (11th) and Dan Buoy (13th) when winning over 2m2f here a fortnight ago and having run on strongly at the finish after being outpaced that day, the step up to even further looks sure to suit David O'Meara's improver. The potential dangers this time appear to be Chocolate Caramel and Night Orbit.

It's hard to look beyond the returning CHIEFDOM PRINCE, representing Sir Michael Stoute. Unraced at two, the well-bred son of Dansili was well held on his debut in last year's Wood Ditton but stepped up markedly on that effort when second, again over 1m, at Nottingham in October. He was collared in the closing stages that day and looks a fascinating contender dropped to 6f this afternoon. Alkhawarah drops from 7f and could fare better than she did on debut at Leicester last month, while Redvers, Diablo Dancer and Luca Cumani's newcomer Ippios are worth noting in the betting.

Private Joke failed to make an impression on his handicap debut at Kempton in December but he remains open to plenty of improvement and being John Gosden's sole representative on the card, it would be folly to rule him out. Marginal preference, however, is for RALEIGH QUAY, who has a better draw and will appreciate the return to further after failing to make an impression over 7f on his latest couple of starts. Effigy and the selection's stable companion Idealism are others to consider closely.

George Downing got a good tune out of ZAFRANAGAR in a 20-runner contest at Doncaster earlier this month, staying on well to fill the runner-up spot behind the reopposing Frontline Phantom. The fifth home that day has franked the form with a subsequent success and Tony Carroll's gelding looks up to reversing the placings with the winner on 7lb better terms this afternoon. Gala Casino Star was third on Town Moor and also commands respect, while Desert Hunter could run well for each-way supporters.
