ASIAN ANGEL (2.30 Pontefract) shaped as though a step up to 1m4f was needed when a rallying second to subsequent winner Nicholas T at Ayr three outings ago and now gets a proper chance to prove it after flying too high at Goodwood and Ascot recently.
Mark Johnston’s gelding hasn’t been helped by a slow start in both those races but his staying-on sixth, beaten less than three lengths, in the Shergar Cup last weekend was encouraging and he should be more at home in this less competitive environment.
He had been largely progressive after a delayed start to the season (didn’t reappear until June) and given the manner in which his yard’s horses usually thrive on their racing, it’s reasonable to assume there’s more to come from him.
Fellow three-year-old Hereby dominates the market - Ralph Beckett’s well-bred filly has obvious scope for improvement after being put up just 3lb for winning on handicap debut at Chester a fortnight ago - but it leaves the race with a nice each-way shape with all nine declared runners currently standing their ground.
