Mugheer made a winning debut at Catterick when displaying signs of inexperience and it will be interesting to see how he progresses from that effort. That being said, whether he can give 4lb to BLAKE'S MONARCH is another matter. He contested the Norfolk at Royal Ascot when showing bright speed before weakening late on and the combination of being gelded and a wind operation gives him obvious claims dropping in class. Paphos completes the shortlist after his Musselburgh fifth.
Niewiadoma has been highly tried since her debut success at Thirsk, with a string of underwhelming efforts, but the significant drop in grade will definitely aid her cause. Lady Dublin won a brace of nurseries in July and wasn't disgraced on ground potentially softer than ideal when third at Ripon. Preference, though, is for MAXIMUS MERIDIUS. The son of Persian Force has been fairly consistent to date and the extra yardage after his third at Chepstow appears likely to suit.
In a contest where plenty have something to prove, EPHRON gets the vote. The son of Calyx has won twice in 2026, including on his penultimate outing at Hamilton, and it wouldn't be a huge surprise if he bounced back from his most recent effort at Carlisle. Just Typical has been running consistently well of late and may have more to offer, while handicap debutant Blue Boy Junior heads the remainder.
Many will fancy their chances in what looks an extremely open event, so only a tentative vote can be afforded to MAGIC BOY. Nigel Tinkler's gelding has yet to run a poor race this term and emerged with credit yet again when third in the Silver Cup at Ripon. The son of Acclamation was successful on his sole visit here, albeit over 7f, and could still have a bit more to offer in contests of this nature. Come On Over almost defied a 7lb rise at Lingfield and is expected to go close nudged up a further 1lb, while others to note include Straight Ahead, Return Of The Gods and the top weight Papa Cocktail.
SUPPLICATE has won all four of her starts since making a pleasing debut at Kempton, including at Salisbury most recently, and the progressive daughter of Ulysses is extremely difficult to oppose, despite a further 6lb rise in the handicap. Pol Roger went desperately close to completing a double at Haydock but he was raised another 2lb for that effort and has yet to defy a mark this high, meaning both Magical Merlot and Obito could emerge as bigger threats.
The consistent STARTLING deservedly got her head back in front at Southwell and appears to have been found an excellent opportunity in which to score again. That said, a 5lb rise could leave her vulnerable to the unexposed All Good, who narrowly prevailed in a Ripon novice and now enters handicaps with the scope for plenty of improvement. Canaria Queen heads the remainder.
This probably isn't quite as open as the numbers would suggest and ALBEGONE gets the verdict. Tim Easterby's gelding has formed quite the partnership with Jake Dickson in recent weeks, winning in narrow fashion at Musselburgh before having those roles reversed at Carlisle. That latest effort did prove that the earlier triumph was no flash in the pan, though, and he holds outstanding claims off the same mark. Golden Havana and Dc Cogent can give him the most to think about.
MUGHEER made a promising debut when winning at Catterick three weeks ago and, being from a top yard, he almost certainly has moe to offer. He has a penalty, but is still much more reliable than Blake's Monarch, who although setting the standard on form, might have been flattered at Royal Ascot and wind and gelding operations, as well as a new tongue-tie, suggests things aren't straightforward. Cyberspace and Paphos are best of the remainder, each holding place claims.
Maximus Meridius should be happier back up to 6f and dropping in grade so he's very much on the short list, but it's the top one LADY DUBLIN who appeals most. She's already a proven winner and ran okay on soft ground last time while stepping back up to 6f will help. Rock Steady Beat hasn't progressed as expected but has form on good to soft. He's respected for his good yard dropping in grade.
Mount King has eased to a mark only just above his last winning one and should go well, while there's another good run in Pisanello, who was twice a course winner in July, including over C&D. The selection, though, is JUST TYPICAL, who is back on turf from a competitive mark and gets a new headgear combination. He's also a former C&D scorer.
Spirit Of Applause will be happier back on better ground and remains on a competitive mark, while Come On Over has progressed of late and ran well from a much higher mark last time. Anaisa is respected back on turf, having returned to form at Newcastle last time, but it's MAGIC BOY who is the selection. A winner at York three starts back, he's twice run well in defeat since, including when finishing well at Ripon last time, and he should go well up 2lb.
Hard to go against SUPPLICATE here, the filly having won four in a row, including all three starts this season. Her wins have been coming in small fields, which she again gets here, and she's taken to overcome her latest 6lb rise. Magical Merlot, back to winning ways at Newbury, is only 3lb higher here and should again go well. He's the danger, athough the 4yo Obito is consistent and continues in decent form. He has been nudged up another 1lb, though.
Marajito hasn't been at her best of late but is considered on July/August form, while All Good is respected on handicap debut having got off the mark in a Ripon maiden latest. The selection, though, is STARTLING, who has taken really well to blinkers, finishing runner-up at Ayr in August and then going one better at Southwell last time. Her mark remains fair and she's taken to follow up back on turf.
Golden Havana's good run of form came to an end at Musselburgh last time but he was turning out just three days after finishing runner-up at Beverley and has had a good break now to freshen up. He should be thereabouts but it's the filly at the bottom of the weights, CHEERLEADER, who appeals most. She's consistent and boasts C&D winning form. Albegone, another in-form sort, remains on a decent mark and can go well again. He's third choice.
